Huskies return top eight scorers and 82.7 percent of scoring overall from 2024-25
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey was selected to finish eighth in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Preseason Media Poll, as announced by the league on Thursday.
The Huskies received 80 points overall in the media poll, ranking ahead of Miami (35). Coming off a national championship last season, Western Michigan was selected to win the league with 252 points and 19 first-place votes, followed by Denver (225, four first-place votes), North Dakota (220, five first-place votes), Arizona State (180, two first-place votes), Colorado College (128), Minnesota Duluth (120) and Omaha (110).
A total of 30 ballots were submitted by local media members from each school, as well as select national media. Points were awarded on a descending scale with a first-place vote worth nine points, a second-place vote worth eight points and so on. While the NCHC will not hold an in-person Media Day in 2025, media will be able to speak with coaches and players from each team via video call during the NCHC's virtual Media Days on Sept. 23-24. Commissioner Heather Weems' State of the Conference address will be posted to NCHC.tv following virtual Media Days.
SCSU returns its top-eight scorers and 82.7 percent of its overall scoring from a season ago as the Huskies look to return to the NCAA Tournament. Included in the group of returners is rising sophomore Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.), who earned All-NCHC Rookie Team honors and became the first freshman in program history to lead the Huskies in both goals and points in 2024-25. Joining Burnevik is the junior trio of Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta), Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland), who each scored 20+ points last season.
The Huskies will feature a five-man leadership group in 2025-26 with senior forward Grant Ahcan (Savage, Minn.), senior defenseman Cooper Wylie (Stillwater, Minn.) and Gross serving as captains. Senior defenseman Mason Reiners (Edina, Minn.) and Hall will wear the "A" as alternate captains.
