SCSU outscored 30-15 in the fourth quarter and OT
St. Cloud, MN. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (6-11, 3-9 NSIC) fell 74-71 in OT to Minnesota Duluth Saturday evening. The Huskies would lead by 16 points in the fourth quarter.
St. Cloud State got off to a strong start as three straight three-pointers led to an 11-2 burst to open the game. After a timeout by UMD, they responded with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit down to one. The teams battled the rest of the first as the Huskies held a 18-16 lead. The battle continued into the second quarter as UMD narrowly held a 29-28 lead with 4:54 until halftime. St. Cloud State produced a strong close to the half as Reagan Briggs knocked down a triple to cap off a 12-2 run. SCSU would go into halftime leading 40-31.
Coming out of halftime, the Huskies continued their momentum with a 9-0 run to open the third as they now led 49-31. The Huskies would lead by 10+ points the rest of the third, but the Bulldogs started to chip away with a 5-1 run to end the third. Four straight points by SCSU to start the fourth halted that momentum momentarily, but with new energy, UMD kept it rolling with a 16-4 run to cut the lead down to four. In need of a big bucket, Alana Zarneke cashed a huge three off an assist by Rachel Kottke with 3:50 remaining. UMD responded with a 9-0 run as a three gave them a 69-67 lead with 43 seconds left. Out of a timeout, Jada Eggebrecht drove down the lane and tied the game with a right-handed finish. The Huskies got a stop on the defensive end and secured the rebound while calling timeout with two seconds left. With a chance to win the game, SCSU went to Eggebrecht who freed herself on the baseline. Her jumpshot just missed as the game would go into overtime.
UMD put the first points on the board in OT as they finished a layup to lead 71-69 with 3:13 remaining. The Bulldogs ramped up their defense as a jumper by Eggebrecht gave the Huskies their first points of extra time with 44 seconds left. The Huskies again produced a timely defensive stop but turned the ball over with six seconds left. SCSU would foul as UMD left the door open with a split pair of free throws. Needing a three to tie, the Huskies would miss a corner three as they ultimately fell 74-71 to the Bulldogs.
