DULUTH, Minn. – No. 15 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (8-14-2, 4-12-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) upset No. 8 Minnesota Duluth on the road, 5-2, behind strong performances from freshman forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) on Saturday afternoon at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth. The win was the Huskies first over UMD since December 9, 2023, and the first against the Bulldogs at AMSOIL Arena since February 9, 2019.
The Bulldogs (12-9-2, 8-7-2 WCHA) got on the board first, taking an early 1-0 lead, just 2:35 into the first period.
SCSU started the second period on a power play and converted just 24 seconds into the frame when redshirt junior forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) scored her first power play goal of the season. Junior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) skated through the left circle and found Zimmermann between the circles who beat the netminder glove side.
Just 13 seconds after Zimmermann's goal, Mikaelyan scored, giving SCSU its first lead of the weekend. Mikaelyan took a feed from redshirt sophomore forward Marie Moran (Lakeville, Minn.) in the slot and went forehand, backhand around the leg pads of the UMD goalie.
Mikaelyan netted her second goal of the game 8:46 into the third period, extending the Huskies lead to 3-1. Junior forward Sidney Jackel (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had her backhand shot saved by the pads of the Bulldog goaltender and the puck rebounded to Mikaelyan who buried the puck into the back of the net.
Junior forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) pushed the SCSU lead to three after scoring an empty net goal from behind the red line.
UMD got a goal back with 55 seconds left before senior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) scored the Huskies' second empty netter of the game with 32 seconds left to bring the game to its final score.
