Smith takes title with 5-0 record
Burnsville, Minn. – St. Cloud State Wrestling redshirt junior 165-pounder Gabriel Smith was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Wrestler of the Week as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. Smith went 5-0 at the Worthington Open with four bonus point wins to take the title.
Smith would reach the championship after winning by tech fall in three of his first four bouts. His lone win that was not a tech fall was a 13-4 major decision against Logan Butzon of Augustana. In the final, Smith faced off against Carson Turnis of Morningside where a first period takedown propelled him to a 4-1 win. Throughout his title run, Smith would outscore his opponents 72-15 and did not get taken down throughout the tournament.
Smith is the second Husky to be named NSIC Wrestler of the Week this season joining Dominic Ducato who earned the honor in November.
Smith and the rest of the No. 13 Huskies will be back in action on Thursday, January 22 as they dual against No. 19 UMary at Halenbeck Hall.
