Huskies concede two power play goals, fall 3-2 in NCHC opener
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – (RV) St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (2-4-0, 0-1-0 National Collegiate Hockey Conference) suffered a 3-2 setback against (RV) Arizona State in its 2026-27 NCHC opener on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Sophomore forward Noah Urness (Roseau, Minn.) and junior forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) scored for the Huskies while sophomore goaltender Yan Shostak (Minsk, Belarus) made 31 saves and only allowed one even strength goal.
Arizona State (5-2-0, 1-0-0 NCHC) scored the game's first goal, a power play tally, 6:14 into the first period, but the Huskies did not take long to respond, netting the equalizer just 2:12 later when Thoreson scored his 20th career goal. Urness picked the puck up along the boards above the left circle and fired a shot in towards the net that was deflected in by Thoreson, who had great net-front position.
SCSU took a 2-1 lead just over three minutes later when Urness found the back of the net himself, scoring his first goal of 2026-27. Sophomore forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) sent the puck deep into the SCSU zone on a neutral zone faceoff and Thoreson applied pressure to an ASU player, forcing a bad pass that went to Roed who was skating through the right circle. Roed fired a perfect backhand pass to Urness who was wide open in the slot, and fired a one-timer that beat the Sun Devil netminder top-shelf.
ASU scored its second power play goal of the game late in the first period to bring the game even at two into the first intermission.
The Sun Devils outshot the Huskies 14-8 in the second but were unable to convert again until early in the third period when they scored the eventual game-winning goal.
