Blue liners Sharpe and McLaughlin score power play tallies for the Huskies
OMAHA, Neb. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (3-4-1, 1-1-1 NCHC) and Omaha (2-4-1, 0-2-1 NCHC) skated to a 2-2 tie in its series opener on Friday night at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb. After a scoreless overtime session, the Mavericks were able to win the shootout to secure the extra conference point in the NCHC standings.
The Huskies were able to capitalize on the power play twice in the game, including the first one in the first minutes after the Mavericks were called for a trip just 14 seconds into the game. Freshman defenseman Will Sharpe (Ladner, British Columbia) gave the Huskies the early lead after finding the back of the net on a rush up the left side of the ice, firing a wrist shot from a sharp angle to beat the netminder near side for the score.
Omaha would later tie the game later in the first period and then take the lead in the second period on goals from Gavin Hodnett and Ryan McCleary, respectively.
In the third period, Omaha let the Huskies stick around and would be called for two consecutive penalties to put the Huskies in a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:10. Right after the two-man advantage ended, SCSU was able to drive the puck to the net on a scoring chance from freshman forward Hayden Paupanekis (Winnipeg, Manitoba). The puck went through the paint and right to the stick of sophomore defenseman Finn McLaughlin (Canmore, Alberta) who had a wide-open net and didn't miss tying the score at 2-2.
SCSU outshot the Mavericks 17-6 in the final frame and had plenty of scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the net for the go-ahead score. Both teams registered two shots on goal in overtime but failed to score. After five unsuccessful shootout attempts, Omaha was able to convert their fifth chance to win the shootout, 1-0.
