ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men’s basketball and women’s hockey teams were extremely successful during the month of December. In the final month of 2018, the two teams saw career and record-breaking performances by multiple student athletes, including basketball’s Sean Smith (Seville, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) and hockey’s Janine Alder (Zurich, Switzerland). For their performances, Alder and Smith have been named the Wolters Kluwer Athletes of the Month.
Alder capped a solid month in December 2018 for the SCSU women's hockey team with a 2-1 victory over Lindenwood on Dec. 30. She posted 27 saves in the game and only allowed one power play goal in the match. Earlier in the month, Alder posted 46 saves in a strong showing against top ranked Wisconsin. She allowed just two goals in the game, which ended in a 3-1 loss for the Huskies. Alder opened the month with 40 saves in a 3-0 loss to WCHA rival Bemidji State. On the season, Alder owns a 2.21 goals against average and a stellar .941 save percentage in 788:07 minutes of play.
Smith was equally impressive during the month of December, helping the Huskies post a 4-2 record in NSIC play by averaging 17.2 points and 9.3 rebounds in six games for St. Cloud State. Throughout the month, the senior put together several career and school record breaking performances as he scored 103 points, pulled in a team-leading 56 rebounds and recorded a school-record 23 blocks in 31 days. On the first day of the month, Smith broke the school record for single-game blocks, tallying eight total in a loss to Minnesota-Duluth. He was later named the NSIC North Player of the Week on December 17 after leading St. Cloud State to two victories over Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls. Over that particular weekend, Smith averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting a dazzling .850 (17-20) percent from the floor and 1.000 (11-11) from the free throw line. He also scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the 80-60 victory over SMSU. Currently this season, Smith is averaging 16.2 points and 8.8 rebounds a game and leads both the NSIC and nation in blocks (56) and blocks per game.
