Women's Hockey: Huskies Tie at Providence, 2-2 OT

Providence, R.I. - The St. Cloud State women's hockey team traveled out east this weekend to take on Providence College in a non-conference series. The Huskies tied the Friars in game one of the series Saturday afternoon 2-2 in overtime. SCSU is now 2-4-1 overall, 2-4-0 in the WCHA.
The Huskies came out strong in the first period. SCSU's Haylea Schmid (Oak Grove, Minn.) scored on a power-play taking a 1-0 lead over the Friars at the 7:47 mark. This was Schmid's first goal of the season. Assists were charted to Molli Mott (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Skye Kelly (Brandon, Manitoba).
Later in the first period the Huskies were able to take a 2-0 lead at the 13:16 mark with a goal by junior Molli Mott. An assist was charted to senior Alex Nelson (Andover, Minn.).
After a scoreless second period the Huskies still led the Friars 2-0.
The Third period was largely controlled by Providence College as they scored two goals. Their first goal came at the 5:14 mark shortening the lead 2-1. The Friars second goal was a last minute shot at the 19:41 mark of the third period, sending the game into overtime tied 2-2.
Overtime was a defensive period by both teams with the Huskies outshooting the Friars 4-1.
Sophomore Amy Olson (Roseau, Minn.) led the Huskies in game one of the non-conference series against Providence recording three shots.
Providence outshot the Huskies by a margin of 41-20.
Sophomore Julie Friend was at goal for the Huskies recording 39 saves and now has a record of 1-2-1.The Friars Sarah Bryant recorded 18 saves and has a record of 2-1-1 going into game two of the series..
SCSU and Providence will continue the two game series in Providence with game two on Sunday, Oct. 28 at the Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The start time is slated for 12 p.m. (CT).
