Huskies Post a 2-0 Shutout Over Lindenwood

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State women's hockey team earned their first victory at home as they took on Lindenwood University in a non-conference game Friday. The Huskies shutout the Lions, 2-0. SCSU improves their record to 3-7-1 overall, 2-6-0 in the WCHA.
Scoring came late in the first period as the Huskies' junior forward Julia Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.) put one away on a pass from freshman Skye Kelly (Brandon, Manitoba) taking a 1-0 lead. This was Gilbert's first goal of the 2012-13 campaign. The Huskies outshot the Lions 19-4 in the first period. Both teams went 0-1 on the power-play in the first.
Lindenwood's goalie Nicole Hensley played a good first period as she recorded 18 saves.
The second period was a defensive period for both teams with the Huskies again outshooting the Lions 14-7. SCSU lost senior Katie Allen (Red Deer, Alberta) at the 5:27 mark of the second period for high sticking but that did not affect the Huskies.
Senior Haylea Schmid scored at the 12:58 mark on a Husky power-play taking the Huskies to a 2-0 lead. Assists were charted to Molli Mott (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Alex Nelson (Andover, Minn.).
The Huskies outshot the Lions by a margin of 46-21 in the game. On the power-play SCSU went 1-4 (17) and the Lions went 0-3 (5) on their power-plays.
Sophomore Julie Friend (Minnetonka, Minn.) was at goal for the Huskies in game one of the series recording 21 saves for the shutout victory. Friend improves her record to 2-3-1. The Lions' Nicole Hensley recorded 44 saves and drops her record 0-7-0 on the season.
The Huskies will return to action with Lindenwood University for game two of the non-conference series Saturday, November 10. The start time is slated for 2:07 p.m.

ANNUAL YOUTH GIRLS' CLINIC
The Huskies are to host their annual U-14 and below Youth Area Girls' Clinic in the National Hockey & Event Center on Sunday, November 11, 2012. The event will take place from 2:45-4:15 p.m. Participants of the clinic will receive instruction from SCSU women's hockey coaches and student-athletes. Each participant will also receive a free ticket to a 2012-13 SCSU women's hockey game. All participants must provide own skates, helmets, padding, gloves, and hockey stick.
SKATE WITH THE HUSKIES
Skating with the Huskies is set to take place on Sunday, November 11, 2012 from 4:30-6 p.m. This event will give participants the opportunity to skate with their favorite players from both the men and women's hockey teams.
