#16 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Tips RPI, 2-1
12/28/2012 11:10:00 PM | Men's Hockey
St. Cloud, Minn. - The #16 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (12-8-0, 9-5-0 WCHA) got back into the win column on Friday, Dec. 28 with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (5-7-4, 1-5-2 ECAC) at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory helped the Huskies split the weekend non-conference series with the Engineers and it also broke a four-game win streak by RPI against SCSU dating back to the 2002-03 season.
The Huskies fought back to earn the victory after watching the Engineers design a 1-0 lead in the first period. RPI's Matt Tinordi scored the game's first goal at 2:43 of the opening period with and assist from Matt O'Grady.
SCSU rallied in the second period with a power play goal by Ben Hanowski at 12:54. He tipped in a shot by teammate Drew LeBlanc as the second assist on the play was charted by Nic Dowd. This was Hanowski's sixth goal of the season and his 96th career point at SCSU. LeBlanc continues to pace the nation this season with 22 assists. Dowd now ranks second on the team this winter with 15 helpers to his credit.
LeBlanc then went on to earn the game winning goal at 19:37 of the second period with his sixth goal of the season, which also marked his 125 career point as a Husky. Rookies Jonny Brodzinski and Kalle Kossila each had assists on the play.
LeBlanc leads the country in scoring with 28 points and his career point total (125 points) moves him into 11th place on the Husky recordsheet ahead of Brian Cook (1987-91) and Brett Lievers (1990-95) - who each had 124 points during their Husky careers.
LeBlanc also owns a nine-game point streak heading into the Huskies' upcoming series against Northern Michigan on Jan. 4-5 in St. Cloud.
On defense, the Huskies were impressive as goalie Ryan Faragher gained his 11th win of the year with 14 saves. The Huskies outshot the Engineers 25-15, which included limiting RPI to just four shots on target in the third period. SCSU was a perfect 2-of-2 on the penalty kill and the Huskies were 1-of-4 on the power play vs. RPI. This marked the 8th consecutive game that the Huskies have outshot their opponents and the seventh consecutive game that SCSU has not allowed a power play goal.
SCSU will host Northern Michigan University on Jan. 4-5. The game on Friday, Jan. 4 is scheduled to start at 7:37 p.m. and the game on Saturday, Jan. 5 is scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m.
