Morley Charts Hat Trick in 6-5 loss for St. Cloud State

St. Cloud, Minn. - A showdown between two of the better defensive teams in the WCHA turned into an offensive showcase as the #14 Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (10-4-1, 6-2-1 WCHA) scored a 6-5 victory over #17 St. Cloud State (8-7-0, 6-5-0 WCHA) on Friday, Dec. 7 at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
SCSU trailed 6-3 in the early going of the third period before freshman forward David Morley scored his second and third goals of the game for SCSU to close the gap to 6-5. The Huskies almost tied it in the closing minute of play with a flurry off quality scoring chances but the Mavericks held on to claim the victory.
The two teams will complete the series at the NHEC with a 7:07 p.m. start in St. Cloud on Saturday, Dec. 8. Nebraska Omaha kicked off the offense on the night at 9:03 of the first period with a goal by Brent Gwidt. The Huskies replied at 11:37 of the first period with an even strength goal by Kalle Kossila, who was assisted on the play by Drew LeBlanc and Andrew Prochno.
UNO regained its lead at 16:47 of the first period with a goal by Ryan Walters and then pushed its lead to 3-1 with a marker by Matt White at 17:18 of the first period.
To ended the high-flying first period, Kossila lit the lamp at 17:40 with a power play goal. Morley and Nick Jensen both provided assists on the goal for the Huskies. The assist was Jensen's 11th helper of the 2012-13 campaign.
The Mavericks stretched their lead to 4-2 at 8:21 of the second period with a goal by Bryce Aneloski, which set the stage for Morley's first goal of the evening. Just seconds after the UNO goal, Morley netted his goal at 8:38 with assists from Ben Hanowski and Nic Dowd to make it 4-3.
UNO grabbed another two-goal lead with a goal by Dominic Zombro at 15:37 and then pushed its lead to 6-3 with another goal by Walters at 2:48 of the third.
Morley added his second goal of the evening at 8:34 of the third with a power play tally to make it 6-4. LeBlanc and Prochno both provided assists on the play. This was Prochno's seventh assist of the season and it pushed LeBlanc's totals to a team-high 15 assists and 20 points in 2012-13. In his career, LeBlanc now has 117 points and 83 assists.
Morley was fitted for the hat trick at 14:32 of the third period with his third goal of the evening. Dowd and Hanowski both chipped in assists on the play. Dowd upped his season totals to 11 assists and 19 points in the game, while Hanowski now has six assists and 10 points this winter.
On the topic of Morley's hat trick, this marked the first time since LeBlanc scored three on Jan. 24, 2009 at Colorado College that a Husky freshman has scored a hat trick. The last time any Husky scored a hat trick was Jensen on Dec. 17, 2011 against Denver. In the game, Morley had three goals and one assist to push his season totals to 4g/6a.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Mavericks 34-27. The Huskies really dominated play in the final period outshooting the Mavs 14-6, which included the final minute of play when SCSU pulled its goalie and sent in the extra attacker.
John Faulkner was the goalie of record for UNO with 29 saves in the game. Ryan Faragher started the contest for SCSU and made 16 saves in the first two periods of play. Rasmus Reijola ended the game for the Huskies in the nets with five saves and one goal allowed in the final period of play.
On the power play, SCSU was 2-of-4 and UNO was 0-of-0 in the game. In fact, SCSU was only called for two penalties in the contest.
