Huskies Post 71-69 Come From Behind Win at SMSU

Marshall, Minn. – St. Cloud State University senior guard Shaun Jensen (Spring Lake Park) scored the Huskies final seven points to lead his team to a 71-69 come from behind win over Southwest Minnesota State University in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) men's basketball action Friday night in Marshall.
The Huskies improved to 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the NSIC and will play at the University of Sioux Falls Saturday evening at 6 p.m. USF defeated Minnesota Duluth 76-55 tonight. With the loss Southwest Minnesota State fell to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC.
Southwest Minnesota State had the game under control until SCSU senior forward Theo Rothstein (St. Michael) gave the Huskies their first lead of the game, 56-55 on a layup with 5:26 remaining in the second half. A layup and one by Jensen gave the Huskies their largest lead of the game, 69-63 with 1:52 remaining.
A Matt Zager layup drew the Mustangs to within two, 69-67 with :57 seconds left. A goaltending call that went against SMSU gave the Huskies the ball and Jensen was fouled with :06 seconds on the clock. He made both free throws and a layup by SMSU's Nick Smith determined the final score.
Rothstein finished the game with 14 points, with 12 points coming in the second half. He was eight of eight from the free throw line, had a team high six rebounds and two blocked shots.
Jensen scored 12 points and made all three free throw attempts. Sophomore center James Fort (South Haven) scored 12 points and junior guard Damarius Cruz (Robbinsdale) tallied ten points.
The Huskies shot 41 percent from the field and made 15 of 18 free throw attempts.
Southwest Minnesota State shot 50 percent from the field and out rebounded the Huskies 38-29. Nick Smith led all players in scoring and rebounding with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Miller scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Vinard Birch also scored 13 points for the Mustangs.
