Men's Basketball Falls to #8 Minnesota State University, 81-75

St. Cloud, Minn. – The Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks prevailed in a highly contested Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match-up with an 81-75 win at St. Cloud State University Friday night in men's basketball.
Minnesota State, ranked #8 in NCAA Division II improved to 14-1 overall and 10-1 in the NSIC. St. Cloud State is 12-3 overall and 8-3 in the NSIC. It was the first win in St. Cloud for the Mavericks since the 2007-08 season. The Huskies have won five of the last eight games between these two teams.
St. Cloud State hosts Concordia-St. Paul Saturday at 6 p.m. The Golden Bears defeated Minnesota Duluth 76-73 in Friday night.
St. Cloud State was led by guards Shaun Jensen (Spring Lake Park) and Damarius Cruz (Robbinsdale) with 18 points each. Both players were seven of ten from the field and Cruz made four of six three-point baskets. Jensen handed out five assists and made all four of his free throw attempts.
First year guard Jordan Poydras (DePere, Wis.) added ten points for the Huskies. Sophomore forward Connor Niehaus (Fremont, Neb.) aalso had ten points and s and a team high seven rebounds.
All five starters for the Mavericks scored in double figures in the game. Assem Marei tallied a double double, scoring 20 points and pulling in 12 rebounds. Jarvis Williams scored a game high 22 points and guard Zach Monaghan had 14 points and eight assists for the Mavericks.
Minnesota State out rebounded the Huskies 37-26, shot 53.4 percent from the field and made 15 of 21 free throw attempts. St. Cloud State shot 48.3 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three point range, making eight of 18 attempts. The Huskies were nine of 14 at the line.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the first half and led by as many as 11 points four times in the half. MSU had a 34-23 lead with 4:30 left in the first and a Jarvis Williams dunk at the end of the half gave MSU a 38-30 lead at intermission.
Minnesota State stretched the lead to 16 points, 52-36, opening the second half on a 14-6 run. To their credit the Huskies battled back to within eight, 58-50 on a Poydras three at the 10:43 mark.
The Mavericks led 66-54 with 7:38 remaining when the Huskies made a push and took their first lead of the game, 69-67 on another Poydras three. A three by Monaghan and a jumper by Marei put MSU up 74-69 with 2:09 to play.
Jensen made four free throw attempts in the final 1:50 and Cruz added a layup but it wasn't enough to hold off the Mavericks.
