HUSKY HOCKEY NOTEBOOK:
FIRST PLACE HUSKIES: The Huskies came away from #5 North Dakota with a three-point weekend on Jan. 25-26. SCSU opened the series on Jan. 25 at the REA with a big 3-1 win that included a pair of goals by Jonny Brodzinski and the game winning goal by Ben Hanowski in the 1st period. In the game, SCSU allowed only 16 shots on goal and posted a season-high 22 blocks in the game. Ryan Faragher made 15 saves and allowed only one third period PPG in the game...SCSU capped the weekend with a 2-2 tie at UND on Jan. 26. Hanowski opened the scoring with a PPG at 3:08 of the first and then tied the game in the 2nd with an extra-attacker goal at 1:59 to make it 2-2. Faragher was strong in the nets with 34 saves as UND outshot the Huskies 36-18 in the game. This marked SCSU's lowest shot total of the season and it was also the first SCSU tie game of the season. The three points allowed the Huskies to maintain the top spot in the WCHA with 25 points.
MAKING A STATEMENT: SCSU postseason honors candidate Drew LeBlanc continues to lead the nation in assists this winter with 28. He added a helper on Ben Hanowski's game tying goal on Jan. 26. LeBlanc also ranks second in the nation this winter with 35 points. In his career as a Husky, LeBlanc ranks 10th in the team records wth 132 points and fifth in the team charts with 96 assists.
HONOR ROLL: SCSU senior captain Ben Hanowski was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. He accounted for three of the Huskies' five goals over the weekend at UND. Hanowski notched the game winner on Jan. 25 with his first period goal at 16:36 and he scored two goals in the 2-2 tie on Jan. 26, including the game tying goal at 1:59 of the third period... SCSU's goal scoring lead in 2012-13 is a four-way tie between Hanowski, Nic Dowd, Kalle Kossila and Jonny Brodzinski with 11 apiece. LeBlanc continues to pace the team with 35 points and 28 assists this season. LeBlanc is just 10 assists away from the SCSU team record of 38 assists set by Brandon Sampair in 2000-01 and Mark Hartigan in 2001-02.
HONOR ROLL II: Jonny Brodzinski was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 29. Brodzinski owns a team-high 11-game point scoring streak headed into the games at Bemidji. Brodzinski posted two goals in the Huskies' 3-1 win over UND and also chalked up an assist on Hanowski's game-tying goal on Jan. 26. Brodzinski has not been held off the scoresheet since Dec. 7 against UNO. Brodzinski and teammate Kalle Kossila rank fourth in the nation for freshmen (and first in the WCHA) with 11 goals apiece. Brodzinski has a total of 20 points in 2012-13. If you are looking for any trends, Jonny Brodzinski's dad Mike Brodzinski scored 20g/14a during his first season of play at St. Cloud State in 1984-85. The elder Brodzinski went on to score 76g/70a during his career at SCSU from 1984-87.
KOSSILA STRIKES AGAIN: SCSU freshman Kalle Kossila will bring a five game point scoring streak into the series at BSU. In his career, Jensen has 14 goals and 60 assists.
FLYIN' RYAN: SCSU sophomore goalie Ryan Faragher seems to enjoy working at the Ralph Engelstad Arena. He gave up one power play goal in the third period on Jan. 25 and allowed just two goals in the 2-2 tie on Jan. 26.
