#2 St. Cloud State Tames Tigers, 6-2
11/23/2013 10:34:00 PM | Men's Hockey
St. Cloud, Minn. - The #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (9-1-2, 4-1-1-0 NCHC) continued its run of success in 2013-14 with a convincing 6-2 victory over NCHC rival Colorado College (1-8-2, 1-5-2 NCHC) on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory moved SCSU's unbeaten streak to five games and it continued SCSU's unbeaten streak on Saturday night during the 2013-14 season. The Huskies also outshot the Tigers 25-22 in the contest, which marked the 10th time this season that SCSU has outshot its opponents.
The Huskies dominated the contest from the starting whistle as junior defender Andrew Prochno set the tempo early with a goal at 1:32 with assists from Ethan Prow and Joey Benik, which gave SCSU a 1-0 lead.
To finish the opening period, sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski scored his fifth goal of the season with a marker at 8:55 that was assisted by Kalle Kossila. The play was Kossila's sixth assist of the 2013-14 season.
SCSU extended its lead to 3-0 with the game winning goal produced by rookie Ryan Papa on an assist from David Morley, who now leads the Huskies this season with eight assists. Of note, the goal was the first game winner charted by Papa as a collegiate player and it was his third overall goal of the season for the Huskies.
In a delayed penalty situation, the Huskies took advantage of the extra attacker as Nic Dowd scored his seventh goal of the season at the 10:00 mark of the second period. A hooking penalty by CC's Gustav Olofsson allowed SCSU goalie Ryan Faragher to come off the ice before the penalty was whistled. Dowd converted on the goal with an assist from Benik.
CC broke the shutout at 13:17 of the second period with a power play goal by Olofsson with a single assist credited to Alex Roos.
To complete the scoring in the second period for the Huskies, Morley chalked up his third goal of the season at 17:44 with a single assist going to freshman Daniel Tedesco. On the season, Morley and Dowd rank second on the club with 11 points apiece while Brodzinski paces the squad with 12 points this winter.
CC stayed in the action with a goal at 17:51 by Jeff Collett but a power play goal by Dowd at 16:15 closed the door for the Huskies. Kevin Gravel and Prochno both provided assists on the play for Dowd.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Tigers 25-22 as Faragher posted 20 saves to gain his eighth win of the season. Josh Thorimbert was the goalie of record for the Tigers with 19 saves on the night. On the power play, SCSU was 1-3 and CC was 1-4 in the game.
The Huskies will enjoy a bye week over the Thanksgiving weekend before resuming play in the always rugged NCHC on Dec. 6-7 at Minnesota Duluth. SCSU will return home on Dec. 13-14 for a pair of non-conference games against Union College at the Brooks Center. The game on Dec. 13 will feature the annual Teddy Bear Toss. All fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used Teddy Bear or stuffed animal to throw onto the ice during the first intermission. All the toys collected will then be donated to the local Toys for Tots campaign in St. Cloud.
