Huskies Earn Another Road Sweep with 5-1 Win at UMD

Duluth, Minn. - The #2 St. Cloud University men's hockey team (12-1-2, 6-1-1 NCHC) brought back its fourth consecutive road sweep of the season thanks to a huge 5-1 win at Minnesota Duluth (6-7-1, 2-4-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The win capped a big weekend at UMD that started with a 4-2 victory on Dec. 6 at the AMSOIL Arena on the shores of Lake Superior.
The Huskies controlled the pace of the game from start to finish tonight as they outshot the Bulldogs 27-20 in the game.
SCSU gained a first period lead with an even-strength goal by Jimmy Murray at 9:36. He was able to convert a picture perfect pass from Nic Dowd that provided Murray with a chance to connect on the one-timer. Cory Thorson was credited with the second assist on the play.
SCSU pushed its lead to 2-0 with the eventual game winner by Brooks Bertsch at 15:57 of the first period. The assist on the play was marked by Joe Rehkamp.
David Morley opened the lead to 3-0 in the 2nd period with a goal at 10:00. Kevin Gravel and Andrew Prochno each had helpers on Morley's goals.
UMD broke the shutout at 11:31 with a goal by Charlie Sampair (cousin of former Husky standout Brandon Sampair).
In the closing minute of the second period, SCSU padded its lead to 4-1 with a goal by Thorson at 19:27. The solo assist on the play was notched by Morley.
To complete the scoring, SCSU's Ryan Papa scored at 12:19 of the 3rd period with assists from Morley and Daniel Tedesco, which made the final 5-1.
In the nets, Ryan Faragher had 19 saves and the victory, while UMD starter Aaron Crandall had 20 saves before being replaced by Alex Fons in the closing minutes of the third.
