#8 St. Cloud State to Finish Regular Season with Trip to Madison

The #8 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (20-13-1, 17-8-1 WCHA) will travel to Madison, Wisc. for games on March 8-9 at 7:07 p.m. both evenings. The games will be played at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at Alliant Energy Center (formely known as the Dane County Coliseum). UW's Kohl Center is being used for the state high school basketball tournament this weekend. The Coliseum was home to Badger hockey from 1967-98 and seats 7,903 for hockey games. The rink is 200x85. Tickets are still available for those fans interested in attending the games down in Madison. HUSKIES SPLIT WITH HUSKIES: The St. Cloud State Huskies scored a weekend split against Michigan Tech on March 1-2 in games played at the NHEC. On March 1, the Huskies charted a 5-3 win over MTU and they completed the weekend with a 5-1 loss to MTU on March 2. In the victory, Kalle Kossila had a three-point night with two goals and an assist. Drew LeBlanc (1g/1a), Nic Dowd (2a) and Andrew Prochno (2a) also had multi-point games for SCSU. Ryan Faragher hit a season-high with 42 saves in the game for SCSU - including 19 saves in the final period...on March 2, Jimmy Murray's third period goal with an assist from Nic Dowd helped SCSU avoid the shutout at 5-1.
NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: SCSU Hobey Baker candidate Drew LeBlanc was the subject of a feature story in the New York Times on Feb. 24. LeBlanc now owns the team record for career games played at 163, as he moves past Ryan Lasch, who had plpayed in 161 games from 2006-10. He also ranks seventh in career scoring at SCSU with 141 points (40g/101a)...For a season, LeBlanc becomes just the 11th player in team history to hit the 30-assist plateau in a season. He leads the nation this year with 33 assists and ranks 3rd with 44 points.
WISE GUYS: The Huskies hit a new team-high by having 10 players selected as WCHA Sc holar-Athletes for 2013. Hobey Baker candidate Drew LeBlanc became just the fifth player in league history to earn Scholar-Athlete honors for the fourth time. The list of Huskies named to the Scholar-Athlete list this season includes: Brooks Bertsch, Nic Dowd, Ryan Faragher, Kevin Gravel, Joey Holka, Nick Jensen, Drew LeBlanc, David Morley, Nick Oliver and Jospeh Phillippi.
HOME ICE: The victory on March 1 clinched home ice in the upcoming WCHA playoffs for the Huskies. SCSU has hosted first round play for the past two consecutive seasons and this marks the fifth time since 2005-06 that the Huskies have hosted first round play. SCSU is 29-24-0 in first round play since joining the league in 1990-91 and the Huskies are 20-6-0 in first round play at home.
FRESHMEN NEWS: Rookie Jimmy Murray scored his fourth goal of the season on March 2 and now has four goals and eight assists to his credit this season. There are five freshmen ranked among SCSU's top 11 point producers in 2012-13. Freshman Jonny Brodzinski continues to lead SCSU with 17 goals this season and rookie Kalle Kossila has 15 goals for the Huskies in 2012-13 to rank second on the team. Senior Ben Hanowski is third on the team with 14 goals this winter...of note, Kalle Kossila ranks third in the nation this season for NCAA Division I rookies with 31 points and Brodzinksi ranks eighth with 28 points scored. Brodzinski leads all NCAA Division I rookies with 17 goals scored this season.
AMONG THE BEST: SCSU's offense ranks third in the nation with a 3.32 goals per game average (113 goals in 34 games). Minnesota leads the country at 3.59 gpg and WCHA rival Nebraska Omaha is second with an average of 3.44 gpg. How good is the WCHA? Out of the top 10 teams in the nation on offense, seven of those teams are from the always rugged WCHA. With an average of 2.53 goals allowed per game this season, the Huskies rank 22nd in the nation on defense. With a .603 winning rate this season, the Huskies rank 13th in the nation for winning percentage.
