Western Michigan Edges #3/4 St. Cloud State, 2-1

St. Cloud, Minn. - Western Michigan University (12-8-4, 6-5-1-1 NCHC) claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over #3/4 St. Cloud State University (12-4-4, 7-3-2 NCHC) in men's hockey action on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
In a defensive battle, the Huskies outshot the Broncos 33-19 but a goal by Shane Berschbach at 4:39 of the third period proved to be the game winner for WMU.
The Broncos opened the game's scoring at 7:10 of the first period with an even-strength goal by Will Kessel, which include a pair of helpers from Nolan LaPorte and Sheldon Dries.
The Huskies charged back with their only goal of the evening at 16:58 of the first period by sophomore forward Kalle Kossila. He was assisted on the goal by sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski and rookie forward Ryan Papa. This was Kossila's seventh goal of the season and his 16th career goal at SCSU. Brodzinski continues to lead the Huskies with 21 points (11g/10a) this season, while the goal marked Papa's seventh assist of the 2013-14 campaign.
After a scoreless second period, WMU's Berschbach notched the game winner with assists from Kenney Morrison and goalie Lukas Hafner in the early minutes of the final period.
In the closing minute of play, SCSU pulled starting goalie Ryan Faragher for the extra attacker but Hafner and the Broncos held on for the win. SCSU outshot the Broncos 10-6 in the final period as Hafner made 32 saves in the game. Faragher was the goalie of record for SCSU with 17 saves to his credit.
On the power play, SCSU went 0-for-6 and WMU was 0-of-3 in the game.
St. Cloud State will continue its 2013-14 season on Friday, Jan. 24 with a trip to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. for a 7:07 p.m. match-up against the University of Minnesota in the North Star College Cup tournament. The first game of the tournament will feature Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State Mankato at 4:07 p.m.
The two winning teams on Friday will then advance to play in the championship game at the Xcel Energy Center at 7:07 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. The consolation game will be slated for 4:07 p.m. on Jan. 25.
