St. Cloud, Minn. - A hat trick by junior forward Jonny Brodzinski propelled the #6/7 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) to a 3-1 victory over #5/6 Colgate University (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
The victory was the first of the season for the Huskies as they ended their 2014-15 opening weekend with a split against the Colgate Raiders.
Brodzinski opened the game's offense with his first tally of the evening at 8:09 of the first period. His play was set up with a picture perfect pass from linemate Jimmy Murray and the second assist went to Ethan Prow on the score.
Brodzinski added the game winner at 17:43 of the first period with a power play goal that was assisted by Joey Benik and Kalle Kossila. The goal capped a dominating first period for the Huskies that saw them outshoot the Raiders 10-4.
Both teams went scoreless in the second period before Brodzinski completed the Huskies' scoring with his third goal of the night at 15:02 of the third period on an unassisted play. Colgate broke the shutout late in the contest with a goal at 17:12 by Tyson Spink with assists from Andrew Black and Spiro Goulakos.
The hat trick was the second in his career for Brodzinski, who also had a three goal night last year on March 7 at Colorado College. In his career, Brodzinski now has 46 goals and 78 points in 82 games played.
In the nets, Charlie Lindgren carded 23 saves for the Huskies and gained his first victory of the season for the Huskies. Charlie Finn was Colgate's goalie of record with 22 saves in the contest. On the power play, SCSU was 1-4 and Colgate was 1-5 in the game. Of note, SCSU outshot the Raiders 25-24 in the game.
