#6/7 St. Cloud State drops OT decision against #17 UMD, 3-2

The #6/7 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (3-4-0, 0-1-0 NCHC) suffered its second consecutive loss in overtime with a 3-2 setback against #17 Minnesota Duluth (5-4-0, 3-2-0 NCHC) on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The game marked the opening of SCSU's 2014-15 National Collegiate Hockey Conference season and it followed a tough 4-3 loss in OT at #1 Minnesota on Nov. 1. The Huskies will resume NCHC play on Saturday, Nov. 8 with the rematch against Minnesota Duluth. Game time at the HBNHC is slated for 7:07 p.m. Tickets are available for the game and may be purchased at the gate or online at www.scsutickets.com.
The Bulldogs iced the victory with the game winner by Cal Decowski at 2:06 of the overtime session. He was assisted on the play by Kyle Osterberg and Austyn Young. The goal capped a back-and-forth contest, which started with a first period goal by Justin Crandall at 12:22 with an assist from Dominic Toninato.
After a scoreless second period, the Huskies finally broke UMD's shutout with a power play marker by junior Jonny Brodzinski at 3:13 of the third period. Andrew Prochno and Kalle Kossila both added assists on the goal, which was Brodzinski's team-leading fifth of the season.
At 8:56 of the third, SCSU's Patrick Russell posted his first collegiate goal with another power play effort on assists from Joey Benik and Prochno.
UMD charged back into the mix with a power play goal at 14:14 by Andy Welinski. The goal tied it at 2-2 and was assisted by Austin Farley and Toninato.
Both squads skated to a draw at the end of regulation before UMD's Decowski charted the GWG in the OT session. On the night, SCSU dominated the shot chart with a 35-21 margin over the Bulldogs including a 14-7 lead in the final period.
On the power play, SCSU was 2-of-6 and UMD was 1-of-4 in the contest. Kasimir Kaskisuo was the goalie of record for UMD with 33 saves to his credit, while Charlie Lindgren took the loss for SCSU with 18 saves in the game.
