St. Cloud State men's hockey edged by #12 Omaha, 5-3

Omaha, Neb. - The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (6-9-1, 2-5-1 NCHC) ended its weekend in Omaha, Neb. with a 5-3 loss to #12 Nebraska Omaha (10-4-2, 6-3-1 NCHC) on Saturday, Dec. 13.
In the first period, Omaha gained a 1-0 lead with an even strength marker by Brian Cooper at 3:55. SCSU rallied to tie the contest at 7:11 with a power play goal by Jonny Brodzinski. He was was assisted on the play by teammate Ethan Prow.
The goal was Brodzinski's team-leading 10th of the season and it was also his seventh power play goal of the season. Brodzinski entered the game leading the nation in power play goals this season.
The Huskies grabbed a 2-1 lead with an even-strength goal by Judd Peterson at 11:28 of the first period. The unassisted goal was Peterson's first goal as a collegiate hockey player and it was his third point of the winter.
In the second period, Omaha battled back to tie the contest at 2-2 with a goal by Tyler Vessel at 3:53. Jake Randolph added the lone assist on the play that made it 2-2. The Mavericks took a 3-2 lead with a goal by James Polk at 16:51. Luc Snuggerud and David Pope each provided assists on the play for the Mavs.
In the third period, the Huskies tied the game at 3-3 with a by Jimmy Murray at 4:36. This was Murray's second goal of the season and it was assisted by David Morley and Patirck Russell.
The Mavericks regained the game's lead at 7:29 of the third period with a goal by Austin Ortega. Assists were tallied on the play by Dominic Zombro and Jake Guentzel. Omaha completed the game with an empty net goal by Justin Parizek to make the final 5-3.
In the contest, Omaha outshot the Huskies 32-27.
The Huskies will continue their 2014-15 season on Jan. 2-3 with a weekend series against non-conference opponent Quinnipiac at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. KCLD FM 104.7 FM will be on hand at the game on Jan. 2 to give away tickets to the upcoming Taylor Swift concert in the Cities to two lucky fans in attendance at the game that night.
