Huskies Gain NCHC Sweep Over UMD with 4-3 Victory

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (17-6-5, 11-4-3-0 NCHC) stretched its unbeaten streak to four games and maintained its hold on first place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference with an impressive 4-3 win over #16 Minnesota Duluth (13-11-4, 8-8-2-2 NCHC) before a crowd of 5,545 fans at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. on Saturday, Feb. 15.
The Huskies outlasted the Bulldogs as Jonny Brodzinski notched the game winner late in the third period to give SCSU its first home sweep of the 2013-14 campaign.
The Huskies jumped into the scoring column early with a goal by Jimmy Murray at :30 of the first period. Murray gained his third goal of the weekend on a nifty set-up pass from Nic Dowd. The second assist on the play was credited to David Morley.
This marked the ninth goal of the year for Murray, while Dowd's assist was his 14th of the campaign and it was Morley's team leading 20th helper of 2013-14.
UMD tied the contest later in the period with an even strength goal by Caleb Herbert at 18:09 of the first. Austin Farley registered the lone assist on the play.
In the second period, SCSU regained the lead at 1:40 of the period with a marker by Ethan Prow, which included assists from Cory Thorson and Joey Benik. This was Prow's fourth goal of the season and his third goal in the last four games for the Huskies.
The Huskies extended their lead to 3-1 with a goal by Ryan Papa at 6:58 of the second. Teammates Jonny Brodzinski and Tim Daly provided assists on the goal, which was Papa's fifth of the season.
The Bulldogs got back into the mix with a goal by Dominic Toninato at 10:41 of the second period, which pushed the score to 3-2. The Huskies held the lead until 4:56 of the third period when UMD took advantage of a 5x3 penalty situation with a power play goal by Alex Iafallo that tied it at 3-3.
SCSU earned the sweep with Brodzinski's 15th goal of the season at 18:11 of the third period. Kalle Kossila and Papa provide assists on the goal, which gave the Huskies the victory.
In the contest, UMD outshot the Huskies 41-38 as the Bulldogs were 1-of-4 on the power play and SCSU was 0-of-1. In the nets, SCSU goalie Ryan Faragher earned his 15th win of the season with 37 saves. Over the weekend, Faragher posted 74 saves in the sweep of #16 UMD.
The Huskies will return to action on Feb. 21-22 with a pair of NCHC road games at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The game on Feb. 21 is slated to be televised on the CBS Sports Network. Fans can also listen to the game live on KNSI AM 1450/FM 103.3 (www.knsiradio.com).
