#5 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey to Host #10 North Dakota

The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (18-7-5, 12-5-3-0 NCHC) will square off against #10 North Dakota (18-9-3, 13-7-0-0 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (5,371 cap./200x100). The game on Feb. 28 is scheduled to start at 8:08 p.m. and the game on March 1 is scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. Both SCSU and UND sit atop the NCHC standings this week with 39 league points apiece.

FIRST ROUND PLAYOFFS: The first round of the 2014 NCHC Playoffs will run from Mar. 14-16 at on-campus locations. The sites for the first round games will be determined by the results of the final four games of the NCHC regular season. RANK AND FILE: The Huskies earned a number five ranking in this week's USA TODAY/USA Hockey poll and a #5 ranking in the USCHO.com poll this week. In the Pairwise rankings at 10 9.m. on Feb. 25, the Huskies were ranked 5th. SCSU was the top ranked team from the NCHC in the Pairwise on Feb 19.
TROPHY TOUR: The NCHC's Penrose Cup trophy will be on display at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Feb. 28 and March 1. Fans will have an opportunity to get an up-close look at the Cup, which will be presented to the NCHC's regular season champion each season.
LAST TIME OUT: #5 St. Cloud State maintained its share of first place in the NCHC with a weekend split at Miami on Feb. 21-22. The Huskies opened the weekend with a 4-3 loss at Miami and then replied with a solid 3-0 win over the Redhawks on Feb. 22 in Oxford. In the 4-3 loss, SCSU's Jonny Brodzinski, Joe Rehkamp and Nic Dowd all had goals. To complete the weekend, Ryan Faragher pitched a 33 save shutout to lead SCSU to a 3-0 win. SCSU's game winner was posted by Jimmy Murray, while David Morley and Dowd also had goals in the contest at MU.
MR. ZERO: The shutout on Feb. 22 was the first of the season for SCSU junior goalie Ryan Faragher, who made 33 saves in the contest. This was Faragher's fifth career shutout and his first since a 4-0 win at Bemidji State on Feb. 1, 2013. The shutout was the first for the Huskies in the all-time series against Miami, which dates back to Nov. 13, 1987... The Huskies' 3-0 win at Miami marked the first win for the Huskies in Oxford since a 5-4 victory on Dec. 11, 1998.
DEFENSIVE PROW-ESS: Defender Ethan Prow continues to wow in 2013-14. He will bring a nine-game point scoring streak into the upcoming series against North Dakota. Prow had assists on Feb. 21 and 22 at Miami, which moved his season point total to 19 (4g/15a). In the last nine games, Prow has notched 10 points (3g/7a). He is a resident of nearby Sauk Rapids, Minn.
A RARE EVENT: Nic Dowd saw a unique streak snapped on Feb. 21, as the game marked the first time this season that the Huskies have lost when Dowd scores a goal. On the season, SCSU is now 12-1-3 when the senior forward from Huntsville scores a goal. Dowd leads the Huskies this season with 18 goals and he is tied for the team point lead at 33 points along with sophomore winger Jonny Brodzinski. In his career, Dowd has 48 goals and 66 assists for a total of 114 points. He moves up to 16th on the Huskies' all-time point list now ahead of Jon Cullen (1999-03) and Ben Hanowski (2009-13), who each had 113 career points.
WINNER, WINNER: Jimmy Murray scored the game winner and an assist in the Huskies' 3-0 win at Miami. Murray has posted a total of four goals in his last four games for the Huskies. On the season, Murray has notched 10 goals and eight assists. In two seasons with the Huskies, Murray has scored 15 goals and 35 points.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski has charted three consecutive multi-point games headed into the series against UND. In his last three games, Brodzinski has two goals and four assists to his credit. On Feb. 21, Brodzinski scored a goal and an assist and on Feb. 22, Brodzinski scored two assists. On the season, Brodzinski has 16 goals and 17 assists for the Huskies.
TOP THREE: The Huskies rank third in the nation on offense with a scoring rate of 3.63 goals per game. In 30 games this season, the Huskies have scored 109 goals. In case you were wondering, SCSU's best-ever goals per game average of 4.26 goals per game was set in 2001-02.
TOP FOUR: On the power play, SCSU ranks fourth in the nation at 25.2 percent in 2013-14. The Huskies charted two goals apiece in the weekend series at Miami and are now 30-of-119 on the advantage. SCSU's all-time best power play rate was 31.1 percent during the 2001-02 season (73-of-235).
LEAGUE LEADERS: Nic Dowd leads the NCHC this season with nine power play goals (overall games played). The Huskies are the least penalized team in the NCHC with an average of 8.4 penalty minutes per game (overall games played). SENIOR SALUTE: The game on March 1 will mark the final regular season home game for SCSU seniors Nic Dowd, Cory Thorson, Kevin Gravel and Brandon Burrell. This group has played a key role in the success of the program as the Huskies have charted a 75-58-16 record during the last four seasons. This group has helped lead SCSU to two WCHA Final Five appearances, the 2013 WCHA regular season title, the 2013 NCAA Division I Midwest Region championship and a bid to the 2013 NCAA Division I Frozen Four.
MORE NOTES: The Huskies have used scoring parity to find success in 2013-14. A total of 11 SCSU players have charted 15-or-more points in 2013-14, and four of those players have posted 25-or-more points in 2013-14.... SCSU junior Joe Rehkamp scored his first goal of the season on Feb. 21 at Miami. Rehkamp now has one goal and three assists in 2013-14.
