#5 St. Cloud State Drops 5-2 Decision Against #10 UND

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (18-8-5, 12-6-3-0 NCHC) lost a 5-2 decision against #10 North Dakota (19-9-3, 14-7-0-0 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory allowed North Dakota to move into first place with 42 points, three league points ahead of second place St. Cloud State. The Huskies and North Dakota will complete the two game series at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center with a 7:07 p.m. game on Saturday, March 1 in St. Cloud.

North Dakota rallied with five goals in the second period to gain the victory, which helped offset a 1-0 lead by SCSU at the end of the first period. The Huskies opened the game's scoring at 10:43 of the first period with a power play marker by Joey Benik. Assists on the play by Benik were provided by Kalle Kossila and Jonny Brodzinski.
The goal was Benik's ninth of the season, while Brodzinski moved into the team's point scoring lead with 34 points thanks to the assist. In 2013-14, Brodzinski now has 16 goals and 18 assists for the Huskies.
In the second, UND opened its barrage with a goal by Connor Gaarder at 5:10. Luke Johnson made it 2-1 with his goal at 9:27 and then UND pushed it to 3-1 with a goal by Mark MacMillan at 10:17 of the second period.
UND made it 4-1 with Gaarder's second goal of the night at 13:54 of the second period before the scoring stopped with a goal by UND's Drake Caggiula at 19:16 of the second period.
In the third period, SCSU gained a bright spot with a goal by defender Kevin Gravel at 15:25. His booming slap shot from the blueline was set up courtesy of assists from Cory Thorson and Tim Daly.
This was Gravel's fifth goal of the season and his 17th point of 2013-14.
In the game, SCSU was outshot by UND 34-24. The Huskies did manage to rally in the third period by outshooting UND 14-8.
On the power play, SCSU was 1-3 and UND was 0-2 in the game. Ryan Faragher was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 21 saves and five goals allowed in 39:52 minutes of play. Charlie Lindgren completed the game for SCSU with eight saves and no goals allowed in the final period. UND's Zane Gothberg collected the victory with 22 saves.
The game on March 1 will mark the final regular season home games for SCSU seniors Brandon Burrell, Nic Dowd, Kevin Gravel and Cory Thorson. A special pre-game senior salute will honor these four players.
Fans can also get an opportunity to check out the NCHC's Penrose Cup trophy, which will be on display at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on March 1.
