The #5/6 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (15-6-5, 9-4-3 NCHC) rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second period with four unanswered goals to earn a 4-2 victory over #15 Denver (13-9-6, 7-6-3 NCHC) on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
SCSU and Denver battled to a 0-0 deadlock through the first period before the Pioneers' Daniel Doremus posted the first goal of the evening at 7:41 of the second period. Assists on the play were added by Trevor Moore and Nolan Zajac.
DU extended its lead to 2-0 with a power play goal by Will Butcher at 9:59 of the second with helpers from Quenitn Shore and Moore.
The Huskies rallied the troops one minute later with Nic Dowd's goal at 10:59 of the second period. David Morley and Ryan Papa each provided assists on the goal, which made the tally 2-1.
In the third period, SCSU tied the game at 2-2 with a goal by Morley at 10:52. The goal was set up on a textbook passing play by rookie forward Daniel Tedesco. The goal was Morley's eighth of the season and it was his 26th point of the year. Morley currently leads the club with 18 assists in 2013-14.
The eventual winner was added by sophomore defender Ethan Prow, who scored at 13:25 of the third period. Dowd posted the solo assist on the play, which was his 12th of the season. The game marked the second consecutive night that Prow has scored a goal for the Huskies and his season total now stands at three.
To ice the decision, Dowd posted his 15th goal of the year with an empty net marker at 19:17 of the third period to make the final 4-2.
On the night, Denver outshot the Huskies 30-24 as freshman goalie Charlie Lindgren made 28 saves in the win for SCSU. This was Lindgren's second victory of the season and his first win since a 10-0 shutout against Alabama Huntsville on Nov. 15. Sam Brittain made 20 saves in the loss for Denver. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-5 and Denver was 1-of-5 in the game.
