Offense Carries SCSU to 7-4 Victory at CC

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The #4 St. Cloud State University (20-8-5, 14-6-3-0 NCHC) stayed in the race for the Penrose Cup and the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's regular season championship with a 7-4 victory at Colorado College (6-21-6, 6-12-5-1 NCHC) on Friday, March 8.
The victory helped the Huskies stay in a tie for first place in the NCHC along with North Dakota, which posted a victory over Western Michigan on March 7 in Grand Forks, N.D. Â Both SCSU and UND have 45 league points this season after 23 games played in the conference. Â The Huskies will conclude their regular season on March 8 with game two of the series against Colorado College at 8:07 p.m. (CT) at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
In an offensive showcase, the Tigers gained an early 1-0 lead at 2:53 of the first period with a goal by Cody Bradley, who was assisted on the play by Scott Wamsganz and Ian Young. Â CC's lead was shortlived as SCSU's Joey Benik rallied the troops with a goal at 3:32 of the first period with helpers from Nic Dowd and Jimmy Murray.
In the second period, SCSU's Jonny Brodzinski scored his first goal of the evening at 1:19 with power play assists from Kalle Kossila and Benik to make it 2-1. Â The Huskies stretched their lead to 3-1 with Brodzinski's second goal of the night at 2:59 of the second period with assists from Ryan Papa and Kossila.
Senior defender Kevin Gravel added his seventh goal of the year at 6:03 of the second period with assists from Murray and Dowd, which pushed the score to 4-1.
The Huskies' comfortable lead quick evaporated as the Tigers rallied with three unanswered goals of their own to tie the game. Â Wamsganz made it 4-2 with a marker at 7:37, and Bradley made it 4-3 with a goal at 11:45 of the second period. Â The CC rally ended at 15:06 with a power play goal by Jacob Slavin, which tied the game at 4-4.
SCSU got back on track in the closing minute of the second period with a power play goal by Benik at 19:49 of the period. Â Ethan Prow and Kossila had assists on the play. Â This was Benik's second goal of the evening and his 12th of the season. Â
In the final period, the Huskies padded their lead to 6-4 with an even-strength goal by Murray at 2:48 of the third. Â Benik posted the lone assist on the goal, which was Murray's 11th of the 2013-14 season. Â To cap the night, Brodzinski earned his first career hat trick with a power play goal at 4:39. Â Kossila and Benik each had assists on the play, which marked Brodzinski's 19th goal of 2013-14.
On the night, Benik had an epic two goals and three assists for five points, while Kossila notched a career game-high four assists. Â On the season, Kossila now has a team leading 23 assists. Â Benik also moved his season totals to 14 assists and 26 points. Â On the topic of multi-point nights, Murray added one goal and two assists and Dowd posted two helpers in the game.
SCSU was outshot 34-28 in the contest but the Huskies offset that margin by going 3-of-4 on the power play, was CC was 1-of-2 on the advantage.
In the nets, SCSU's Ryan Faragher made 30 saves to gain his 18th win of the season. Â Josh Thorimbert posted 21 saves in the loss for the TIgers.
