St. Cloud State Men's Hockey charts 3-1 win over #5/6 Miami

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (8-10-1, 3-5-1 NCHC) relied on a pair of goals from junior forward David Morley to earn a 3-1 victory over NCHC rival #5/6 Miami University (14-7-0, 7-4-0 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 9 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory snapped a three-game winning streak for the RedHawks and it also broke a three-game losing streak for the Huskies in NCHC competiton. Â The two squads will complete the weekend series at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. with a 7:07 p.m. game on Jan. 10. On Friday night, SCSU and Miami skated to a 0-0 draw after the first period of play. Â The stellar play of Huskies' netminder Charlie Lindgren helped SCSU offset being outshot 17-8 in the opening period.
In the second period, Miami finally broke the shutout with a goal at 5:06 of the second by Sean Kuraly. Â Matthew Caito and Alex Wideman each posted assists on the play.
The Huskies evened the ledger at 13:57 of the second period with a power play marker by David Morley. Â He was set up on the play by Joey Benik and Kalle Kossila, which came during a 5x3 power play for the Huskies. Â This was Kossila's team-leading 10th assist of the season, while Benik now has seven assists in 2014-15.
To open the third period, senior Joe Rehkamp notched his first goal of the season at 4:09 with helpers from Andrew Prochno and Jonny Brodzinski. Â The goal was also Rehkamp's second game winning goal of his career at SCSU. Â The assist for Brodzinski was his seventh of the season and his team leading 18th point of 2014-15.
In his career, Brodzinski now has 92 points in 99 games played at St. Cloud State. Â Brodzinski will bring a seven-game point scoring streak into the second game of the Miami series on Jan. 10.
