The Huskies continue win streak with 2-0 victory over Lindenwood

The St. Cloud State Women's (7-7-1, 4-7-1 WCHA) hockey team extended its win streak to five with a 2-0 win over the Lindenwood Lions (3-10-2, 1-4-2 CHA) on Nov. 28 in St. Charles Missouri.
As the first period unfolded, the Huskies found themselves short just 6:59 into the game but played strong on the penalty kill and held Lindenwood to zero shots on net in the two minutes. Lindenwood returned the favor, giving the Huskies a power play at 15:38 of the first period, but the Lions goaltender held them off and the game went into first intermission with a 0-0 score.
The Huskies came out in the second period on fire getting 10 shots off within the first six minutes of play, but only a couple found Lindenwood goaltender. The first goal for the Huskies came 6:28 into the second period when freshman forward, Julia Tylke, gained her 6th assist on the season after sending a shot on net where Molly Illikainen was there to put in the rebound. The Huskies outshot the Lions 8-6 in the second period and went into the third period with momentum in the favor.
St. Cloud were given a powerplay opportunity 4:47 into the third, but couldn't beat Lindenwood's defense. Minutes later, SCSU's Hanna Brodt, was sent to the box for hooking, but yet again played strong in the defensive zone and held their 1-0 lead. The Lions pulled their goaltender with 1:26 to play in effort to close the lead and send the game into overtime, but Payge Pena put the puck in the open net with 1:01 left in the game, solidifying the Huskies win with a 2-0 score.
Lindenwood outshot the Huskies 21-18 in the contest but the Huskies battled throughout and came out of the game on top.
Katie Fitzgerald continues to perform in between the pipes for the Huskies and was awarded this afternoon with her first shut-out of the 2015-16 season. She has been in nets for six of the Huskies' seven season wins this year, which sets a career high for the senior goaltender which was previously set at four in her freshman year.
The Huskies look to take game two of the series on Nov. 29 at 2:00 pm.
