North Dakota edges St. Cloud State 3-2 on Feb. 27

Grand Forks, N.D. - The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (15-15-1, 10-10-1 NCHC) lost a close 3-2 decision at #1 North Dakota (23-6-3, 14-5-2 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 27 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
North Dakota scored two goals in the first period and added a third goal early in the second period that offset a strong Huskies' comeback in the second half of the contest that was highlighted by two power play goals for SCSU.
In the first period, UND's Nick Schmaltz scored at 17:36 to make it 1-0. Â UND pushed its lead to 2-0 at 17:36 of the first period with a power play goal by Brendan O'Donnell. Â Assists on the play were charted by Nick Mattson and Paul LaDue. Â At 5:57 of the second, UND grabbed a 3-0 lead with a goal by Connor Gaarder, which included assists from Austin Poganski and Mattson.
The Huskies broke the shutout with a power play marker by Ben Storm at 7:58 of the second period. Â He was set up on the play with assists from Andrew Prochno and Jimmy Murray. Â This was Storm's second goal of the season and his first power play goal at SCSU. Â The assist was Prochno's 12th of the campaign and his 91st point as a Husky, and it was Murray's 10th assist in 2014-15.
The Huskies continued their second half rally with another power play goal by Joey Benik at 4:47 of the third period. Â Ethan Prow and Jonny Brodzinski each had assists on the play, which was Benik's 12th goal of the campaign. Â The assist was Prow's 13th of 2014-15 and it marked Brodzinski's 13th assist of the season. Â Both Brodzinski and Benik are now tied for the team's point lead with 30 apiece this winter.
In the game, UND outshot the Huskies 30-24. Â On the power play, SCSU was 2-4 and UND was 1-3. Â Charlie Lindgren suffered the loss for SCSU wirth 27 saves to his credit, while Zan McIntyre had 22 saves for UND.
The Huskies will complete their weekend series at UND with a 7:07 p.m. game on Feb. 28 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
