St. Cloud State men's hockey to open NCHC playoffs at Omaha

The St. Cloud State University Huskies men's hockey team (16-17-1, 11-12-1-0 NCHC) will open play in the NCHC Playoffs with a first round trip to #7/8 University of Nebraska Omaha (18-10-6, 12-8-4-3 NCHC) on Mar. 13-15, at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb. The action will get underway on March 13 at 7:37 p.m. (CT), while the pucks drops on March 14 at 7:07 p.m. (CT). If needed, the third game in this best of three series will take place at 7:07 p.m. on March 15. Fans can listen to all games on KCML FM 99.9 (www.lite999.com). Fans can watch the game live on the web at www.NCHC.tv/scsu

NCHC CHAMPIONS: St. Cloud State University captured the inaugural regular season championship of the NCHC in 2013-14. The Huskies finished the year with a first place mark of 15-6-3-0 in the always rugged NCHC. SCSU posted 48 league points to win the Penrose Trophy, while North Dakota trailed in second place with 45 points. This marked the second consecutive season that SCSU has won a regular season conference title. In 2013, the Huskies won the WCHA regular season championshp. 200th VICTORY:  The victory on March 7 marked Bob Motzko's 200th win during his college coaching career. In 10 seasons with the Huskies, Motzko's career record now stands at 200-153-41. He ranks second in the SCSU recordbook for most coaching victories behind Craig Dahl, who had 338 wins from 1987 to 2005.
DU SPLIT:  The Huskies ended their regular season with a weekend split against #7/8 Denver at the HBNHC. SCSU opened the weekend with a 3-2 setback against Denver on March 6. The Huskies completed the series with a 4-2 victory over Denver on March 7. The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Huskies. SCSU's Jonny Brodzinski had two goals and David Morley coined the game winner in the second period for the Huskies vs. Denver.

DEFENSIVE "PROW"ESS:   Junior defender Ethan Prow will bring a six-game point scoring streak into the weekend series at Omaha. Prow has charted two goals and five assists in his last six games for the Huskies and he has scored 13 points (2g/11a) in his last 10 games played for the Huskies. On the season, Prow has posted 19 points (4g/15a).
BIG WEEKEND:  St. Cloud State Hobey Baker and postseason honors candidate Jonny Brodzinski enjoyed a solid weekend in action against Denver. He finished the two game set with two goals and two assists, which moved his season totals to a team-high 19 goals and 34 points. On March 7, Brodzinski scored the game's first two goals 33 seconds apart in the second period and then added the first assist on David Morley's game winner at 7:13 of the second. He had eight shots and was +3 on the weekend... In his career, Brodzinski now has 108 points and that places him 22nd on the team's career point chart (all games played at the DI level). His 62 career goals ranks eighth in the team records ahead of Tyler Arnason, who had 61 goals from 1998-01. Mark Hartigan is SCSU's all-time goal leader with 86 from 1999-02.
WINNER, WINNER:  David Morley now has a team-leading four game winners this season. The Huskies are 9-0-0 this season when Morley lights the lamp. In 33 games this winter, Morley has 13 goals and 11 assists and his career totals are 33 goals, 43 assists and 76 points.
NCAA LEADERS: The Huskies rank fifth in the nation for least penalty minutes per game at 9.1 PIM per game. SCSU has been called for 131 penalties this season. SCSU set a team record for fewest penalties and fewest penalty minutes in 2013-14 with 137 penalties for 304 minutes...The Huskies rank fourth on the power play this winter at 24.5% (34/139). SCSU's Jonny Brodzinski paces the nation with 10 power play markers in 2014-15.
KALLE COUNTDOWN: SCSU junior forward Kalle Kossila needs two more points to join SCSU's 100-point club. In 112 career games, Kossila has 33 goals, 65 assists and 98 points. This winter, Kossila leads the Huskies with 20 assists and ranks third on the team with 25 points.
SCSU NOTES:Â The Huskies have outscored their opponents 95-85 this season and own a 34-21 edge in power play goals scored... Rookie defenseman Nathan Widman leads SCSU on the plus/minus this year at +9... SCSU seniors who played in their final regular season home games at the HBNHC on March 6-7 were Garrett Milan, Andrew Prochno, Tim Daly, Jarrod Rabey, Joe Phillippi, Brooks Bertsch, Nick Oliver and Joe Rehkamp.
STRONG SCHEDULE:  SCSU's strength of schedule this season is ranked #2 in the nation among DI programs. SCSU is 11-15-0 in games against nationally ranked teams. The Huskies finished their regular season with eight consecutive games against teams currently ranked among the nation's top 10, including #1 UND, #6 Minnesota Duluth, #7 Denver and #8 Omaha.
WHERE THEY RANK: In NCHC games this season, Joey Benik ranks third in the league with 26 points scored. Jonny Brodzinski ranks first in the league with 13 goals and Benik ranks second in the NCHC with 18 assists this winter. Brodzinski and Patrick Russell lead the NCHC in power play goals this year with seven apiece, while Ethan Prow ranks fourth among NCHC blueliners with 15 points in conference action. Russell ranks second in the NCHC for freshman scoring with 20 points, and Charlie Lindgren's save rate of .920 this year ranks third in the conference.
