St. Cloud State ends regular season with 4-2 win over #7/8 Denver

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (16-17-1, 11-12-1 NCHC) capped its 2014-15 regular season with a solid 4-2 victory over #7/8 University of Denver (20-12-2, 13-10-1 NCHC) on Saturday, March 7 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.

The victory by SCSU and loss by Denver handed the Huskies a ticket to Omaha for the first round of the NCHC playoffs. St. Cloud State will open tournament play on Friday, March 13 with at the University of Nebraska Omaha. The best of three series will continue at Omaha's CenturyLink Arena through Sunday, March 15. The victory also marked the 200th career win for St. Cloud State University head coach Bob Motzko, who is in his 10th season here at St. Cloud State.

In the contest against DU, the Huskies broke into the scoring column in the early going of the second period with a pair of markers by Hobey Baker candidate Jonny Brodzinski. He chalked up the game's first goal at 1:39 of the second period with a solo assist from teammate Nathan Widman.

Brodzinski kept the ball rolling with his second tally of the night at 2:12 of the second period. Joey Benik and Ethan Prow each had assist on the play. This was Brodzinski's 19th goal of the season and it was his 62nd goal as a Husky. The play also marked Benik's 19th assist of the year and it was Prow's 15th assist of the season.

Of note, Prow will bring a six-game point scoring streak into the playoffs. He has scored 13 points in his last 10 games, which includes 11 assists for the Huskies.

SCSU's David Morley notched the game winner at 7:13 of the second period with his 13th goal of the season. He was assisted on the play by Brodzinski and Widman. This was Widman's fifth assist in 2014-15 and it was also Brodzinski's 34th point.

Denver rallied to start the third period as Trevor Moore broke the shutout with a goal at 9:05. The Pioneers narrowed the gap to 3-2 with a goal at 11:53 by Zac Larraza. Denver was hot in the final period as they put 15 shots on net but an empty net goal by Joey Benik dashed the Pioneers' hopes at 19:06 of the final period. This was Benik's 13th goal of 2014-15.

On the night, Denver outshot the Huskies 37-20. On the power play, SCSU was 0-0 and Denver was 0-2. Denver did not take a penalty in the game. In the second period, Denver was awarded a penalty shot after a delay of game call in the crease by the Huskies. SCSU netminder Charlie Lindgren stonewalled DU's Trevor Moore on the penalty shot attempt.

In the game, Lindgren made 35 saves to gain the victory for the Huskies. Evan Cowley was the goalie of record for the Pioneers with 16 saves to his credit.

The game also marked the final regular season home game for the 2014-15 SCSU seniors. This group of outstanding student-athletes includes Jarrod Rabey, Andrew Prochno, Joe Rehkamp, Nick Oliver, Tim Daly, Brooks Bertsch, Joe Phillippi and Garrett Milan. Congrats SCSU Seniors!
