The St. Cloud State women's hockey team fell 7-0 to the #3 nationally ranked Minnesota Gophers on Jan. 22, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, MN.Â
The Gophers came out strong and within the first four minutes were up 2-0 on the Huskies. They continued to control the first period, putting two more up on the board and out shooting SCSU 13-3.Â
St. Cloud came out with a strong second testing Gopher goaltender Amanda Leveille with 10 shots on net, most of which created scoring chances for the Huskies. Minnesota extended their lead to 6-0 in the second 20 minutes, but that did not discourage the Huskies who continued to get stronger as the game went on. Â
As the final period unfolded the Huskies held Gopher offense to 9 shots on net, in which they scored their final goal of the game.Â
Molly Illikainen led the Huskies with four shots on net, with freshman forward Julia Tylke and sophomore defense Brittney Anderson following with three each. On the defensive side Paye Pena and Lauren Hespenheide led the team with two blocked shots each.
The loss moves St. Cloud to a 11-10-3, 7-9-3 WCHA record. The series continues on Jan. 23 at 3:07 p.m. Â
