St. Cloud State falls to U.S. NTDP by 7-6 tally in OT

The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (16-4-0, 8-2-0 NCHC) lost a hard fought 7-6 exhibition game in overtime against the U.S. National Team Development Program squad on Sunday, Jan. 3 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies and the U.S. NTDP each notched 35 shots on goal in the contest as Joey Anderson posted the game winning goal at :22 of the OT session to claim the victory for the U.S. NTDP.
SCSU opened the game with a goal by Blake Winiecki at 5:19 of the first period. SCSU pushed its lead to 2-0 with a marker by Mikey Eyssimont at 11:18 of the first period before U.S. NTDP broke the ice with a goal by Kieffer Bellows at 12:16 of the first. Trent Frederic tied the game at 2-2 with his goal at 14:14 of the first.
In the second period, Winiecki issued his second goal of the evening at :51, as Jon Lizotte and Patrick Russell each had assists on the play. Anderson then connected on a power play goal at 2:11 of the second period to tie the contest at 3-3.
At 7:28 of the second period, Winiecki gained the hat trick with a shorthanded goal at 7:28 with assists from Joey Benik and Jon Lizotte. The Huskies stretch the lead to 5-3 to ended the period with a goal by Nate Widman at 10:25 of the second with helpers from Ben Storm and David Morley.
In the third period, USA's Patrick Khodorenko scored at 5:37 to close the gap to 5-4. Winiecki ended his big night with his fourth goal of the evening at 8:24 of the third period. His power play goal was assisted by Jimmy Murray and Niklas Nevalainen.
The U.S. NTDP ended the period with two unanswered goals by to tie the game at 6-6 at the end of regulation. Trent Frederic tied the game at 17:36 of the third period to force the OT session. Anderson then stepped into the spotlight with the GWG at :22 of the OT session.
On the night, SCSU was 1-1 on the power play and USA was 1-3. Rasmus Reijola was the goalie of record for SCSU with 28 saves in 60:22 minutes of play, while Jake Oettinger made 29 saves to gain the win for the U.S. NTDP.
The Huskies will continue their 2015-16 season on Jan. 8-9 with a pair of home dates against NCHC rival Colorado College at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
