#4/5 St. Cloud State wins defensive battle vs. Colorado College, 2-1

The #4/5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (17-4-0, 9-2-0 NSIC) gained a share of first place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference with a 2-1 victory over Colorado College (4-17-0, 2-9-0 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 8 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The win pushed SCSU's into a tie for first place with North Dakota (18-2-2, 9-1-0 NCHC) as both teams have 27 league points.
Mikey Eyssimont jumped started the SCSU offense in the first period with an even-strength goal at 4:00. Assists on the play were chalked up by Jimmy Schuldt and Kallie Kossila. This was Eyssimont's third goal of the season and it moved Kossila's team-leading assist total to 18 in 2015-16.
SCSU's Patrick Russell added his 10th goal of the 2015-16 season at 12:07 of the first period, which gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Eyssimont and Ethan Prow each had assists on the play for SCSU, which proved to be the game winner.
Colorado College broke the shutout in the second period with a power play goal by Cody Bradley at 3:39. Teemu Kivihalme and Hunter Fejes each posted assists on the goal.
From that point, both team's played shutdown defense as SCSU netminder Charlie Lindgren had 26 saves in the game to improved his record to 16-4-0 in 2015-16. Jacob Nehama also turned in a top effort for the Tigers with 34 saves in the game.
On the night, SCSU outshout the Tigers 36-27. CC was 1-3 on the power play in the game and SCSU was 0-5 on the night.
The two teams will continue their weekend series at 7:07 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. HUSKIES HIGHLIGHTS:
- Senior Ethan Prow now has 82 career points as a Husky. This total includes 15g/67a in 129 games played. Prow ranks 7th in the team's career scoring charts for defenseman. He is just one point behind current SCSU assistant coach Garrett Raboin, who had 83 points during his SCSU playing days from 2006-10.
- Prow ranks 2nd in the nation among DI defenseman with 1.24 ppg and he lead the nation's blueliners this year with 17 assists. He also ranks 5th in the nation among all DI players with 1.00 assists per game.
- Kalle Kossila keeps moving up the career scoring charts at SCSU. He now has 125 career points and ranks 12th in the team records behind Brandon Sampair, who had 129 points from 1997-01. Kossila's 83 career assists ranks ninth in the team ranks behind former NHLer Ryan Malone, who had 84 assists from 1999-2003.
- Kossila also leads the team this season with 18 assists and 26 points. He has already equalled his scoring totals from the 2014-15 season, when he tallied 6 goals and 20 assists.
- Patrick Russell's notched his 10th goal of the season tonight, which equals his goal scoring output from his freshman season when he gained All-NCHC Rookie Team honors.
- Charlie Lindgren now ranks 11th in the nation with a 1.81 goals against average this winter. He ranks 2nd in the nation among DI goalies with 16 victories and his winning percentage ranks fifth at .800 (16-4-0).
- SCSU leads the nation with 92 goals in 2015-16. On offense, SCSU ranks second in the nation with 4.38 goals per game and the Huskies rank 6th on defense at 1.90 goals allowed per game. SCSU is second in the nation on the power play at 28.6 percent (22/77) and the Huskies rank second in the country for least number of penalty minutes per game at 6.9. SCSU's .810 winning rate ranks third in the nation.
