Madison, Wis. --- After a standout performance by SCSU goaltender, Katie Fitzgerald, the Huskies (11-12-3, 7-11-3 WCHA) fall 3-0 to #2 Wisconsin Badgers (25-1-1, 19-1-1 WCHA) on Jan. 30 at La Bahn Arena.
The Badgers came out and controlled the first couple minutes of play and were awarded a goal after the puck bounced off of a SCSU defensemen, changing direction and finding the back of the Huskies net. With 40 seconds left in the opening 20, Caroline Markstrom was sent to the sin bin to serve a two minute minor for checking. The Huskies killed off the last bit of the period and entered the second a man down.
SCSU returned to full strength 1:20 into the period and just minutes later were awarded their first power play of the game. The Badgers took another penalty 10 seconds after their first giving the Huskies a 5-on-3 for nearly two minutes. The two man advantage was cut short after Alyssa Erickson was given an interference penalty on the face-off three seconds later. The Huskies continued with a 4-on-3 power play but could not find the back of the net before all three penalties expired. The Huskies saw their second power play of the game three minutes after Erickson's return but could not beat the Badger defense to tie the game. With 2:02 left on the board Lexi Slattery took a hooking penalty testing her team with their second penalty kill of the game. The Huskies penalty kill came out on top as the second period came to a close with the Badger leading 35-9 in shots on net.
The Badgers came out hungry for more in the third period and peppered Fitzgerald in net until they finally put in their second goal of the game on their 45th shot on net with 4:47 left on the board. Fitzgerald headed to the bench to give the Huskies a man advantage for the last two minutes of the game. The Badgers took advantage and closed the game with an open net goal with 1:14 on the clock.
