Madison Wis. --- The St. Cloud State women's hockey team came ready to play in game two but could not shut down #2 Wisconsin Badgers who took the game 3-0 on Jan. 31 at La Bahn Arena.
The Huskies came out of the gate looking to shut down the Badgers and stepped up in the first period tallying 10 blocked shots. Payge Pena led the team getting in front of three Badger shots, one of which came on a Badger power play that was awarded after Molly Illikainen was sent to the box at the 12:51 mark for slashing. With 4:08 to play in the first period, offsetting penalties were given to SCSU's Julia Tylke for roughing and UW's Jenny Ryan for unsportsmanlike conduct. Tylke was given an additional roughing penalty which gave the Badgers their second power play of the game. The Huskies penalty kill came out huge once again denying the Badgers a goal and they entered the first intermission with a scoreless game.
St. Cloud was hungry for a goal entering the second period and were given the opportunity when Rachel Jones took a two minute high sticking penalty 3:09 into the period. The Huskies were unable to gain offensive control and gave up a short handed goal with 14 seconds left in the Jones penalty and 15:05 remaining in the period. The Huskies continued to battle and put up eight shots on net but Badger goaltender, Anne-Renee Desbiens was there to turn them away.
The Badgers were looking to extend their lead in the third period and came out on fire but SCSU remained composed in the defense zone turning away the conference leading offense. The Badgers pulled ahead with 13:18 left on the clock when Emily Clark sent it high glove side past St. Cloud's Katie Fitzgerald. Minutes later Clark finished a rebound and tallied her second goal of the game to round out scoring and end the contest with a 3-0 score.
Fitzgerald was busy between the pipes in both games of the series facing 92 total shots over the weekend.
St. Cloud returns to the Herb Brooks National Hockey center on Feb. 5-6 to host Bemidji State.
