Mankato, Minn. --- In the first game back after winter break the St. Cloud State Huskies (8-8-3, 4-8-3 WCHA) cemented a shoot-out win against the Minnesota State Mavericks (3-16-2, 0-14-1 WCHA) after 60 minutes of regulation time ended with a 1-1 score.
SCSU was looking to continue its early season success in their first game of 2016 and came out with the first goal of the game just 40 seconds after puck drop. Lexi Slattery charted her third goal of her senior season after former senior and Huskies leading scorer, Molly Illikainen, found the defender and made an across the crease pass where Slattery put it in the back of the net and gave the Huskies an early lead. The second assist was awarded to freshman powerhouse Julia Tylke. St. Cloud was out-shot by the Mavericks 10-6 in the first period but were able to escape the first 20 minutes with a lead.
The Huskies held onto their 1-0 lead throughout the second after MSU added 11 shots on net and the Huskies posted 7.
St. Cloud went into the third period up on Mankato, but the Mavericks were quick to tie it up after freshman forward, Jordan McLaughlin, was found in the slot and put a one-time shot past SCSU goaltender, Katie Fitzgerald, less than three minutes into the final period. Neither team could find the back of the net for a second time during regulation play, which resulted in a 1-1 tie and forced the contest into overtime.
The goaltenders saw little action in the extra five minutes as both team were held to a shot-less overtime period, which resulted in the game being decided in a shoot-out.
The shoot-out brought two goals from the Huskies and one from Mankato giving SCSU their first win of 2016. Tylke, Illkainen and junior forward Payge Pena were sent out in the shoot-out, where both Illikainen and Pena scored their second shoot-out goals of the season to solidify the shoot-out win for the Huskies.
The Huskies will lace up their skates again tomorrow at 2:07 pm in search of the series sweep against the Mavericks.
