Mankato, Minn. --- St. Cloud State (9-8-3, 5-8-3 WCHA) adds success to its weekend after getting a 4-3 overtime win on Jan. 9 against the Minnesota State Mavericks (3-17-2, 0-15-1 WCHA) after a shoot-out win in Friday afternoon's contest. With the addition of today's OT winner the Huskies move back to 5th place in the WCHA and have claimed 19 of 24 points in the last 8 WCHA games. They are 7-1-2 since Nov. 13 and have won both ties in a shoot-out.
Minnesota State was looking for revenge in game two against the Huskies when Amanda Conway sent a one timer past SCSU's Katie Fitzgerald 4:27 into the opening frame. St. Cloud tied the game after a rebound was left infront of the Mavericks net for Vanessa Spataro to put in at 9:23. MSU responded minutes later to take the lead back with a wrap around behind Fitzgerald's net. The Huskies wasted no time in tying the game when freshman forward, Hannah Potrykus, scored her third goal of the season 1:03 seconds after Mankato's second goal of the night.
Both teams entered the third on a mission but it was St. Cloud State who took its first lead of the game after a goal from sophomore forward Alyssa Erickson 2:07 into final 20. The Huskies held the lead until late in the game when a shot from the point snuck to the back of the net with 39 seconds left on the board. The game was sent to extra time for the second time in the series.
With 32 seconds standing between the second shoot-out of the series, St. Cloud's Molly Illikainen put a wrist shot past Maverick goaltender to end the weekend with a 4-3 victory over MSU.
Fitzgerald was credited with 26 saves in the game while SCSU tested the Minnesota State goaltender with 33 shots on goal.
The Huskies head back to the road to face the Ohio State Buckeyes on Jan. 15-16. St. Cloud is set to return to the HBNHC on Jan. 22-23 to take on the Minnesota Gophers.
