The #17 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (7-6-0, 3-4-0 NCHC) returned to the win column in top fashion with a 3-0 shutout victory over #16/13 Westerm Michigan University (7-4-2, 3-4-0 NCHC) on Friday, Dec. 2 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Huskies were led by freshman goalie Zach Driscoll, who charted his first collegiate shutout with a stellar 25 saves in the contest. This was SCSU's first shutout of the 2016-17 season and SCSU's first shutout win since Charlie Lindgren scored a 7-0 win over Arizona State on Jan. 2, 2016.
The shutout also snapped a two-game losing streak for the Huskies, who will match up against Western Michigan again at 6 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Huskies set the tempo early with the game winning goal by Mikey Eyssimont at :48 of the first period. The early strike for SCSU was assisted by Blake Winiecki and Will Borgen. This was Eyssimont's seven goal of the season and it was Borgen's eighth assist of the year.
The game turned into a defensive grind for the next two periods as neither team scored for the remainder of the first period or second period. The Huskies issued their first insurance goal at 15:56 of the third period when Winiecki scored an even-strength marker with assists from Niklas Nevalainen and Eyssimont. In the closing minutes of play, WMU pulled its goalie but the Huskies quickly replied with an empty net goal that sealed the Broncos fate. The ENG was credited to Robby Jackson at 17:22 of the third with the solo assist going to Judd Peterson.
The goal was Jackson's third of the season and it was Peterson's fourth assist of the year. Of note, Peterson, Eyssimont and Winiecki all lead the team with 11 points this season.
In the game, SCSU and WMU each had 25 shots on target. Colin Olson was the goalie of record for WMU with 22 saves in the contest. SCSU was a perfect 5-of-5 on the penalty kill and the Huskies were 0-1 on the power play.
