St. Cloud Women's hockey fall in first game of the WCHA playoffs

Grand Forks, North Dakota ---The St. Cloud State Women's hockey team (13-17-4, 9-15-4 WCHA) dropped 6-1 against the University of North Dakota (17-11-5, 13-10-5 WCHA) in their first game of the WCHA playoffs on Jan. 26 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
UND opened fire within the first five minutes of the game when they scored the opening goal on their first shot 4:56 in the period. The Huskies put up five shots in the 15 minutes that followed but were denied a game tying goal before time expired.
North Dakota took control in the second period with 15 shots to St. Cloud's 3. They scored two goals in an 18 second span to extend the lead 3-0. They nabbed two more goals before the second period ended, one of which came with 23 seconds left on the clock.
The Huskies entered the third down 5-0 and were looking to break Shelbie Amsley-Benzie's shutout. They were given the first power play of the game when UND took a slashing penalty 5:22 into the final 20 minutes. It was Brittney Anderson who got the Huskies on the board with her fourth goal of the season. She was assisted by Julia Tylke and Molly Illikainen. The assist marks Tylke's 14th of the season, while Illikainen nabbed her 99th career point. St. Cloud held of the Fighting Hawks 13 shot offense in the third period, but UND topped of the night with one final goal with 41 seconds left in the game for a 6-1 victory.
The teams face off for game two of series on Feb. 27 at 2:37 p.m at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
