COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) is proud to recognize 60 freshman and first-year transfer student-athletes for their academic success. The 60 recipients are added to the 2015-16 NCHC Academic All-Conference Team, which was originally announced Feb. 17 when 98 sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes were honored. Among the 60 newcomers, 25 also earned NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team distinction, joining the 33 student-athletes who received the accolade in February.
This list of honorees includes six first-year student athletes from St. Cloud State University. Those playered recognized included freshmen Jacob Benson, Mikey Eyssimont, Clark Kuster, Jon Lizotte, Patrick Newell and Jimmy Schuldt. Kuster, Newell and Schuldt were also named to the 2015-16 NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team.
The Huskies charted impressive academic success as a team in 2015-16. Out of 26 players on the squad, 22 players were named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference team. The group also included a total of seven players, who were named to the NCHC Scholar-Athlete team in 2015-16. SCSU ranked second among NCHC teams for most players on the 2015-16 NCHC Academic All-Conference team with 22. Omaha had the most members on the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team with 25, while St. Cloud State had 22, Miami 21 and Western Michigan 20.
To be eligible for the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team, a student-athlete must compile a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (or better) and have completed a full academic year at their current institution. Similarly, for the NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team, a student-athlete must achieve a 3.5 cumulative GPA or better with a full year of academic studies. Freshmen and first-year transfers were not eligible in February as they had not completed a full academic year, but with the 2015-16 academic calendar complete, the rising sophomores and transfers are now eligible to earn NCHC academic honors. Athletic success and playing time are not criteria for these awards.
In all, a record 158 student-athletes earned NCHC Academic All-Conference Team in 2015-16, topping the 128 from 2014-15, which included only 31 freshmen and first-year transfers last season. A total of 58 student-athletes garnered NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team this past season, which was the first season any student-athlete with a 3.5 GPA or better was recognized.
