MacDonald Breaks 1,000; Nooker Scores Big in Victory Over Upper Iowa

St. Cloud, Minn.- In a dominate 83-66 win on Friday night, St. Cloud State's two seniors shined as Betsy MacDonald became the newest member of the 1,000 point club and Chelsea Nooker scored a season high 28 points to lead the Huskies to victory over Upper Iowa on the hardwoods of Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies (8-7, 6-4 NSIC) and the Peacocks (2-13, 2-9 NSIC) started the game point for point, until the Peacocks took their only lead of the game at 9-10, but the Huskies would get the next basket to go up 11-10 and never look back. By the end of the first quarter the teams were only separated by one with the Huskies up 19-18.
The second quarter is where the Huskies started to separate themselves from the Peacocks by holding the visitors to just six points in the frame. Whether it was the starters for the Huskies or the bench, their dominance showed and they headed into halftime with a 36-24 lead.
The Peacocks would come out of the locker rooms with a renewed fight, but the Huskies defense was ready to defend their teams' lead as the two teams each added 22 points in the third quarter.
The final frame would prove to be the historic one as the Huskies would outscore the Peacocks 25-20. Nooker added nine points in the frame.
MacDonald marked her name in the record books with just 2:40 left in the game when she was sitting at 997 and got fouled going for the three pointer that would seal her fate. A calm, cool-headed MacDonald would head to the free throw line to take three shots, and she made use of every single one of them. Betsy becomes the 30th player to join the 1,000 point mark, joining Nooker who booked her membership early this season.
The Huskies would ride the wave of MacDonald and Nooker's success to victory taking down the Peacocks 83-66.
Nooker led the team with 28 points on the night, her highest of the season. MacDonald would add 18 points on the night, while Amanda Christianson added 12 and Madelin Dammann added 10. MacDonald would also account for 7 assists on the night, matching her best of the season to lead the Huskies. Freshman Brianna Johnson was strongest under the basket for the Huskies with six rebounds in the game.
Blair Klostermann led the Peacocks with 18 points on the night.
The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 when they play host to Winona State at 4 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall. Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchased at the gate or online at scsutickets.com.
