St. Cloud, Minn.- The St. Cloud State and Winona State women's basketball teams faced off on Jan. 14 in a match that will go down in the books as the two teams fought tooth and nail for 40 minutes against each other with Winona State finding themselves as the victors in a 71-64 final.
The Huskies (8-8, 6-6 NSIC) started the game in complete control as they went up quick 6-0 on the heels of two three pointers from Betsy MacDonald and Andrea Thomas respectively. The Huskies would go on to add three more field goals to their scoring going up 15-8 on the Warriors by the midway point of the quarter. The Huskies would find a way to maintain their lead through the end of the first, going into the second quarter up 20-13 over Winona State.
The second quarter saw a resurrgence from the Warriors as their high powered offense came out shooting going on a 9-2 scoring run over the Huskies. This marked the point that it was a constant scoring battle for the two teams as the lead would change 3 times in the final six minutes. With just under two minutes to go in the quarter the two teams were all tied up at 35-35 when the Huskies took a timeout to stave off some of Winona's momentum. The Warriors were determined to head into the break with a lead however, as Hannah McGlone continued her dominance in the paint with a lay up to put Winona State up by two heading into halftime, 37-35.
The third quarter held much of the same aspects of the first half with both teams coming out hot from halftime. The Huskies would get ahead of the Warriors at the halfway point when they took the lead at 49-48 off a Brianna Johnson lay up. The Huskies would maintain their lead despite both teams adding four points before the end of the quarter to make the score 53-52 in St. Cloud State's favor.
The final frame would see the two teams knotted up once again, this time at 56-56. After allowing the Warriors to go on a five point run the Huskies found themselves back within one point trailing 60-61. However, a late technical foul called on Johnson gave the Warriors two free throws to add to their lead. McGlone would only make one shot, leaving the Huskies down 62-60, but the foul gave the Warriors all the wind back into their sails. They would hold the Huskies to just four more points in the quarter, while adding nine of their own to solidify their 15th win, 71-64.
The Huskies were led in the loss by Andrea Thomas's 19 points and eight assists. MacDonald added 18 points, while going 6-11 from the field. Chelsea Nooker and Thomas lead the team in rebounds picking up seven each for the Huskies. The team as a whole shot 100% from the free throw line for the second time this season.
The Warriors were led by Tara Roelofs's 19 points.
St. Cloud State will now travel to Northern State and Minnesota State, Moorhead on Jan. 20-21 respectively. The Huskies will return home Jan. 27-28 to play host to Wayne State and Augustana. Tickets are still available and may be purchased at the gate or at scsutickets.com.
