Senior goaltender Madeleine Dahl stopped a career-high 50 shots in Huskies loss
ST. CLOUD—After weathering an early storm, a three-goal second period undid the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (7-18-3, 5-15-2 WCHA) en route to a 5-0 loss, and a series sweep, at the hands of No. 4 Minnesota (19-5-3, 15-4-3) on Saturday.
The defeat pushed the Huskies' winless stretch against the Gophers to 34 games and was the ninth time they have been shutout in 28 games this season.
Due to a multitude of factors—including a flu bug that spread its way through the locker room—SCSU was unable to match its Friday night intensity. The Huskies charted just 12 shots and never had more than five chances on goal in any period, which hampered any chance for a comeback.
"We just weren't able to muster and kind of fight back tonight," head coach Erid Rud said. "We were slow with puck and kept getting stripped from behind. Mentally, we just weren't there tonight right from the get-go."
"They had their way with us all night."
Senior goaltender Madeleine Dahl—making just her third start in the last three years—kept St. Cloud State close through the game's opening 25-plus minutes. She stopped the Gophers' first 21 shots of the game, including all 18 in the first period as Minnesota barraged her goal, en route to a career-high 50-save afternoon.
Dahl's was the Huskies' third individual 50-save performance of the season. With the loss, they dropped to 0-3-0 on the year in such games.
"Maddie played incredible to keep it scoreless," Rud said. "Her competitiveness, to jump into back-to-back games against the Gophers, was outstanding. She gave us quality minutes and gave us a chance to stay in the hockey game."
But soon after the puck dropped on the second period, Minnesota flexed its muscle and tallied three times in a 6:56 span to open up a 3-0 lead—which proved to be backbreaking in a game where SCSU was unable to mobilize a threatening attack.
"It was demoralizing to give up three in the period," Rud said.
The Gophers added on a pair in the final frame to round out its scoring and seal the Huskies' fate. This weekend was the sixth time SCSU has been swept in league play this season and leaves it tied for fifth place with Ohio State at 19 points apiece with four games to play.
St. Cloud State returns to the ice for a crucial WCHA series against the Buckeyes next weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Game time is 5:07 p.m. CT on Friday, February 3 and 2:07 p.m. CT on Saturday, February 4.
