#20 St. Cloud State men's hockey on the road to Miami

The #20 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (9-8-1, 4-5-1 NCHC) will continue its 2016-17 season on Jan. 6 with a 6:35 p.m. (CT) road game at NCHC rival Miami University. The two teams will complete the weekend series at the Steve Cady Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio with a 6:05 p.m. (CT) game on Saturday, Jan. 7. Miami brings a 5-8-5, 1-4-3 NCHC record into the games this weekend.

IN THE POLLS: The Huskies were ranked #20 in the USCHO.com poll this week and they received votes in the USA Hockey/USA Today poll this week.
NEXT HOME GAMES: The Huskies will be back home for a pair of games against Denver on Jan. 20-21 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. BACK WITH THE HUSKIES: SCSU head coach Bob Motzko is scheduled to be back with the Huskies this weekend in Miami and freshman defender Jack Ahcan will also be available for play. The pair missed the games in Arizona since they were participating in the IIHF World Junior championships with Team USA. Motzko is serving as the head coach of Team USA, while Ahcan is a defenseman for USA. The tournament will conclude on Jan. 5 in Montreal. Team USA has advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament with a 5-0 record. Team USA will match up against Team Russia on Jan. 4 in the semifinals. The other semifinal match features Sweden and Canada. Fans can watch the games on the NHL Network.
IN THE NCHC: In NCHC games played this season, the Huskies rank second among league teams with a power play rate of 20.9% and a penalty kill rate of 87.5%.
LEADERS: Judd Peterson and Mikey Eyssimont both pace the Huskies this season with nine goals apiece. Peterson's next goal will be his 30th career goal with the Huskies.
GOOD GUYS: SCSU is the nation's least penalized NCAA Division I hockey team in 2016-17 with a low average of 9.3 penalty minutes per game. In 2015-16, SCSU averaged 7.1 penalty minutes per game.

THIRD PLACE: The Huskies wrapped up 2016 with a trip to the Arizona State Desert Classic on Dec. 30-31. To open tournament play, SCSU dropped a close 4-3 match against Connecticut on Dec. 30. This marked the first time these two teams have played each other. SCSU completed the tournament with a 4-2 victory over host Arizona State in the tourney consolation game on Dec. 31. SCSU is now 3-0 in the all-time series against the Sun Devils.
TIP OF THE HAT: Sophomore forward Robby Jackson scored his first career hat trick during the Huskies' win over ASU on Dec. 31. Jackson had two shorthanded goals in the game, which ranks second in the team records behind George Awada's legendary SHG hat trick on Feb. 14, 1998 against Michigan Tech... Of note, this was the first hat trick charted by a SCSU player since Judd Peterson had three goals vs. Minnesota on Oct. 21, 2016.
NORTH STAR CUP: SCSU will participate in the 2017 North Star Cup on Jan. 27-28. SCSU was the 2016 North Star Cup champion. The Huskies open tournament play in 2017 on Jan. 27 with a match against Bemidji State. Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth will play the second game on Jan. 27. The championship game and consolation game will take place on Jan. 28. All games will be played at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul, Minn. BAND OF BROTHERS: Jack Poehling scored his third goal of the season during the 4-2 win against ASU. He was assisted on the play by his brothers Nick Poehling and Ryan Poehling.
TEAM NOTES: Junior Blake Winiecki posted his 49th career point as a Husky during SCSU's game against Connecticut. Winiecki had one goal and one assists in the contest. In his career at SCSU, Winiecki has 25g/24a. Sophomore teammate Mikey Eyssimont also had one goal and one assist in the game vs. Connecticut. He needs one more point to hit the 50-point plateau. As a Husky, Eyssimont has 23 goals and 26 assists... SCSU has outscored its opponents 61-57 this season... Mikey Eyssimont (9g/7a) leads the Huskies this season with 16 points. Patrick Newell tops the team this winter with 12 assists. Of note, Eyssimont leads the club with 71 shots on goal this season.
MORE KILLING TIME: SCSU now ranks 12th in the nation on the penalty kill at 86.3 percent (57-of-66). The Huskies have not allowed a power play goal since 1:22 of the third period against North Dakota on Nov. 19. Since that game, SCSU has not allowed a PPG over the last six games. The Huskies are 23-of-23 on the PK since giving up the PPG vs. UND.
HUSKIES VS. REDHAWKS: SCSU will resume its series this weekend against Miami. The Huskies are 8-12-2 in the all-time series against the RedHawks. The series started on Nov. 13, 1987 with an 8-1 loss at Miami...SCSU is 3-2 in the last five games against Miami and 7-3 in the last 10 games played against Miami. Last year in Oxford, the Huskies posted a 5-1 victory on Feb. 5, 2016 and a 3-2 loss on Feb. 6, 2016... Bob Motzko, who served as an associate head coach at Miami from 1991-93 and 1994-98, owns a 9-10-1 record against the RedHawks during his career with the Huskies. One of Motzko's players at Miami during his time in Oxford was current RedHawk coach Enrico Blasi...
ROAD TRIPPING: The Huskies continue their six-game road swing in Miami. SCSU started its travels on Dec. 30-31 with a pair of games in Prescott Valley, Ariz. SCSU will play the games in Miami on Jan. 6-7, followed by a pair of road dates in the NCHC at Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 13-14. In case you were wondering, the driving miles for all that travelling would be approximately 4,316 miles. The Huskies get back to the friendly confines of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Jan. 20-21 for a pair of home games against Denver.
