Freshman forward's first career goal snaps Huskies' three-game skid
ST. CLOUD—Freshman forward Kate Murphy's second half goal proved decisive for the St. Cloud State soccer team (6-7-0, 4-6-0 NSIC) in a 1-0 win over Sioux Falls (4-7-2, 3-5-2) on Saturday.
After a run of dangerous attacking play early in the second half built their momentum, the Huskies broke through in the 60th minute as Murphy slotted home a well-played through ball from freshman forward Tatyana Gusakow. The marker was the first of the Wauwatosa, Wis., native's career and stood up as the game-winner thanks to a smothering effort from the SCSU defense.
The shutout win pushes the Huskies to 12 points in conference play with five league games left to play.
Murphy's goal was the pay off for an SCSU attack that applied heavy pressure on the USF goal throughout. The Huskies out-shot the Cougars, 17-3, in the match, including a vast 9-1 edge in shots on target. The low Sioux Falls offensive output can be credited to a stout SCSU back line and midfield that was relentless in keeping possession and did well to push the Cougars' attackers to the outside.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Christian was only forced into one save to earn her fifth win of the season.
St. Cloud State wraps up this NSIC weekend on Sunday, October 15 against Southwest Minnesota State. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Husky Stadium. Soccer fans can purchase tickets to the game at scsutickets.com or on game day at the stadium box office. SCSU students with a valid student ID receive free admission to all Huskies soccer home matches.
