
Olson Scores in Season Opener, SCSU Women’s Soccer Plays to Draw with Northern Michigan

Olson scores seventh career goal in tightly contested season opener
MARQUETTE, Mich. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (0-0-1, 0-0-0 NSIC) played to a 1-1 draw against Northern Michigan (0-0-1, 0-0-0 GLIAC) to open the 2025 season on Friday afternoon. The Huskies and Wildcats played an even, back-and-forth game with the Huskies taking a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute before an equalizer goal from NMU in the 75th minute.
TURNING POINT
SCSU led the charge in the first half, outshooting the Wildcats 6-4 in the first half with five shots on goal, but the first 45 minutes went scoreless. Junior midfielder Grace Olson (West Des Moines, Iowa) found the back of the net in the 66th minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead, scoring her goal on a free kick from outside the box, hitting the cross bar before finding the back of the net. The Wildcats would respond nine minutes later with a goal of their own to even the score at 1-1 in the 75th minute.
In the final 15 minutes, the Huskies had two corner kicks and one shot, while the Wildcats had three shots and one shot on goal, but neither team could find the back of the net to pull ahead.

SCSU continues its two-game road trip to start the season with a Sunday afternoon contest against Michigan Tech. The two teams will play at 11:00 a.m. CT in Houghton, Mich.

- Olson netted her seventh career goal with the second period tally. She also scored the final goal of the season for the Huskies in 2024.
- Strickland returned to action for the first time since Nov. 17, 2023, after missing the entire 2024 season due to injury.
- Three Huskies – freshman forward McKenna Breunig (Sauk City, Wis.), freshman midfielder Gigi Fiorelli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and freshman midfielder Chloe Orlow (Naperville, Ill.) – each made their collegiate debuts in the contest.
