Three different Huskies score to deliver three crucial conference points
WAYNE, Neb.—Three different players found the back of the net as the St. Cloud State soccer team (8-7-0, 6-6-0 NSIC) scored early en route to tying a season scoring high in a 3-1 road win at Wayne State (3-7-5, 2-6-4) on Saturday.
Coupled with Minnesota Duluth's 1-0 loss at Augustana, the Huskies' win vaults them into eight place in the conference, and the final tournament position, at 18 points with three games to play. SCSU is also just two points behind seventh place U-Mary.
Their three goals against the Wildcats tied an SCSU season high and they got the scoring started early. Sophomore forward Hannah Marion opened the scoring in the 15th minutes with her team-leading fourth goal from a well-placed cross from junior forward Kylie Cleary. The strike was Marion and Cleary's second connection in as many games.
After WSC drew level in the 33rd minute, sophomore midfielder Monica Majeski converted a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Brooke Bares from seven yards out to put the Huskies back in the lead for good. The assist was Bares' team-high fourth of the season.
Freshman forward Kate Murphy rounded out the standout offensive effort with a strike from 12 yards out. Murphy, the reigning NSIC Offensive Player of the Week, now has goals in three-straight games.
The SCSU defense was once again up to the task, holding Wayne State to just a single shot on goal. It was the third-straight game the Huskies have held their opponent to under three shots on goal and the ninth time in 15 games this season.
Marion and Murphy combined for nine of the Huskies 16 shots and five of their seven chances on target, while sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Christian registered her seventh win.
St. Cloud State wraps up the penultimate weekend of conference play on Sunday, October 22 at Augustana. Kick off for that contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. Soccer fans can stream the match live at gouge.com or on the NSIC app, which is available for download on Apple TV, Roku, Amazon TC and Android TV.
