Huskies come up four points short of third-straight NSIC Tournament berth
BOX SCORE
BEMIDJI—The St. Cloud State soccer team (8-8-2, 6-7-2 NSIC) saw its 2017 season come to an end with a 4-1 road defeat at the hands of Bemidji State (14-0-3, 12-0-3) on Sunday.
With the loss, the Huskies finished their conference campaign in ninth place with 20 points—four points behind Minnesota Duluth for the final spot in the NSIC Tournament. This season marks the first since 2014 that SCSU has missed the postseason.
The Beavers raced out to a 2-0 lead early with goals in the fifth and 17th minutes. After halftime, sophomore forward Hannah Marion buried a rebound off of the crossbar in the 52nd minute to bring the Huskies within one, 2-1, but that is as close as they came. BSU extended their lead in the 69th and 76th minute to put the game well out of reach.
Marion's goal was her third in her last five games played.
SCSU did not go without a fight, though. With its season on the line, SCSU charted 10 shots in the second half and finished with a game high 13, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Beavers. Junior forward Maria Kass led the attack with three shots on goal and four Huskies finished with multiple chances on target.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Christian made three second half saves in the loss.
With her strike, Marion finished the season as the Huskies' goals and points leader with five goals and 10 points. Her goal was assisted by freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Dziubinski and freshman forward Kate Murphy. Murphy's helper was her eighth point of the season, seven of which came in SCSU's last six games. The Wauwatosa, Wis., native finished the season tied for second on the team in goals and second in points.
St. Cloud State finished its season with an 8-8-2 overall mark and a 6-7-2 record in NSIC play. The Huskies came on strong down the stretch run, going unbeaten (3-1-2) in five of their last six games.
