#2 St. Cloud State sweep Omaha with 5-0 win on Dec. 2

The #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (11-2, 6-2 NCHC) gained a spot on top of the NCHC standings thanks to a 5-0 victory at #20 Omaha on Saturday, Dec. 2.

The victory also clinched a weekend sweep for the Huskies, which is the fifth time this season that SCSU has earned a series sweep.

After a scoreless first period, SCSU gained the game's first lead with a goal by Jake Wahlin at 4:20 of the second period. Kevin Fitzgerald and Jon Lizotte both had assists on the play, which was Wahlin's third goal of the weekend.

The Huskies pushed their lead to 2-0 at 6:08 of the second period with a power play tally by Blake Winiecki. This was his fourth goal of the season and it was assisted by Jimmy Schuldt and Mikey Eyssimont. Of note, the play was Schuldt's team leading 14th helper of the year.

SCSU added an insurance goal in the third period with a marker by Jon Lizotte at 4:15 with assists from Wahlin and Blake Lizotte. This was Jon Lizotte's second goal of the season and it was Wahlin's fifth point of the weekend. His trip to Omaha resulted in three goals and two assists.

Jack Poehling moved SCSU's lead in the contest to 4-0 with his shorthanded goal at 7:50 of the third period. The goal was unassisted and it was Jack Poehling's team leading sixth goal of the season. This was the first SHG of his career at SCSU.

The offense was completed at 16:13 of the third with a power play wrist shot goal by Robby Jackson. Eyssimont and Schuldt each had assists on the play that made the final score 5-0.

David Hrenak gained his second career shutout with 40 saves in the win for the Huskies. Evan Weninger had 28 saves for UNO as the Mavericks outshot the Huskies 40-33 in the game. On the power play, SCSU was 2-5 and the Huskies were 5-of-5 on the penalty kill in the game,
